POSTAGE: Entered at the Postoffloe, Decatur, HL, as kc-cad class matter. TELEPHONE 29 SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1S92. Thb fact that forty-seven democratic members of the Maryland legislature declared for Cleveland for the presidency to three for Hill shows that the litter, outside of his own state, is never in the hunt. The nomination of Bill would be political suicide for the democrats and moat members of the party know it. The people of Nebraska are waiting anxiously for the Boyd-Thayer decision.

ImporUiii work is being held back which cannot be begun until the authority of the court is received. The premature publication of the judgment ought not to affect the justices. Tn Housa has already been in session over a month, acd nothing has been done, practically speaking, beyond the election of the necessary officers and the distribution of the patronage at their disposal. But that is nothing surprising. The House very rarely does anything.

Of course nobody expects the House Committee on Elections to be equitable in its dealings with republican contestants. It is not expected that the democrats will be any more lenient with republicans now than tho republicans were with the democrats in the last cession. A wheat yield of 611,780,000 bushels in 1891 is a clear proof that the farmers made intelligent and profitable use of their time. They were too busy to attend to much else than their farm work. Illinois democrats no doubt think that Palmer would be a very good man for the presidency.

Southern democrats would oppose him because he served in tho Union army, and be used to ba a re- publican. MENTAL TELEGRAPHY. We offer attractive bargains in our house during the holidays. Keating went to Esst St.

Louis but recently. Before going to that city he was engaged as a switch tender in the Wabash yards at Decatur. Keating was killed while trying to couple two cars. Frank Baldwin, the T. H.

He says he was hired as a car builder, but the com psny put him at work tearing down old freight cars and gave him a hammer and cold chisel for tools and a piece of ntil brcku off and flew in his eye, and be says it was cnuied by the unsuitable tools. A serious wreck occurred on the Illinois Central road at Heyworth about 10 o'clock last night. A south bound freight tram was bucking in on a switch to allow a north bound freight to pass, but had not gotten all on tee switch when the north bound train came along and struck it. Seven cars were wrecked, two of them, coal cars, are across the track.

Both cf the engines are badly disabled, one of them being off tho track. The wreck is strewn all along the track through the town of Heyworth and obstructs two crossings. R. ABBOTT CO. of March ha was lying in bed, when the idea occurred to him that a book should be written on tho Nevada silver mines, the Great Bonanzt, and that one Wm. U. Wright, of Virginia City, was the man to write it.

He hastened to put on paper a letter to his old fellow reporter of a dozen years-be fore, mapping out tho plan of the book. Then it occurred to him that if the book should not find a publisher, he would be placed in an unpleasant so he put the envelope in a pigeon hole and wroto to his publisher, who chanced to be out of town. Here the matter dropped. Oa March tirh, the postman brought in a letter from Virginia City. Picking up the envelope, Mr.

Clements said to a relative who was with htm, "This letter is from one of Virginia City, and is dated March 3, seven days ago. He proposes to make a book on the Nevada silver mines." Mr. Clemens then stating the plan of the book as sketched in the letter. He then broke tho seal and found his statement of its contents to be correct Another example was that of the telegraph, which was originated simultaneously by Professor Henry in America, Wheatstone in England, Morse on the sea and a German in Munich. i SUBSCRIPTIONS TO THE 22d SFRIES -OF A TTT-AH.
