Never before have we had to seek outside help of any kind; and this is such an awful thing to discuss that my husband consult anybody in town. But because of our other children (we have five), and for the sake too, we let the matter drift. It began a year ago last fall; and from then until now I have done my utmost to talk sense to the boy.

Also my husband and I have punished him; but I am be-j ginning to believe he be rea-1 soned with. Practically every day there is something lying to his immoral offenses against smaller boys. Yes, that is the awful problem. The other night, after he told us about this, his dad whipped him. Then he was told to hang up his coat; and instead of obeying, he went upstairs, left through a window and over a roof and ran away.

He was gone four hours. Next morning he confessed he ran away because his dad said he ought to be locked from nice little he thought he would go away. But when it started to snow, he came back. This is just one of many times he has run away. We just know what to do; but perhaps somebody would know.

We have raised one fine son who is in the service; and all the children are perfectly normal except this bad boy, who needs help so desperately. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated. R. P. DEAR R.

I have asked a specialist for light on this subject. And he in turn has a question. He asks: a child gets sick and vomits and has diarrhea, do we punish him for it? Is that any Well, obviously, the answer is no; it would be savagely ignorant to punish a child who is sick and help vomiting, etc. And it is just as awful, and uncalled- for, to lambast your small son for having an emotionally sick personality. Your duty is to get to the root of the difficulty and remedy the cause of the moral disorder.

And you certainly doing this when you beat the boy for admitting his sickness to you. The doctor says the outstanding fact of your story is that the boy tried to define his feelings to you. This shows he knows he is in trouble; and in his own way is trying to do something about it. He is implicitly appealing to you for help, in letting you know about his problem. the sad part, the doctor says, the parents haven any way, shape or form remotely helpful to the He adds, a child does what he do, a baffled rigidly punitive or condemnatory attitude can easily drive him to worse behavior.
