Clip a candy thermometer into the container with the wax before you begin. Never allow the temperature of the wax to rise above 240 F. (Although wax will melt as a much lower temperature, this high temperature is required in order to insure a solid, hard sand- wax wall.) Caution When you make the hole to insert wick, be sure to leave at least an inch of wax at the base of the candle so that the wick will not penetrate the sand wall of the candle.

This is to lessen the chance of the walls collapsing as the wick bums down, creating a fire hazard.
