He said covering a story with East was always "a real education. He had such an up attitude." Herald Managing Editor Pete Weitzel called East "one of the few people you could really say was universally liked. He was an enormously friendly and outgoing person.

He made people feel good about what he was doing." East won dozens of local and national photography awards for his pictures of boxers, wildlife, a jet on takeoff and all manner of subjects. For many years, he specialized in sports photography, winning so many awards that he lost count. Among his major awards were the Joseph Costa Award for leadership in the National Press Photographers Association, a citation from the same association, and the Burt Williams Award, given for 40 years of service. FISHER VHS East, long active in several local and national journalism associations, served as secretary of the National Press Photographers Association in 1966-7. During his tenure, he started the association's national clip contest.

Born in Atlantic, Iowa, East began his career working nights at the Des Moines Register and Tribune and days as an apprentice in commercial photo studios. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January 1941 and served as an aerial photographer and laboratory chief with the First Photo Mapping Group. After retiring from the service in 1946, East joined the staff of the Daily Oklahoman and Times in Oklahoma City. He moved to the San Antonio Express and Evening News in 1950 as a sports photographer. next year, he got a call from the Miami Herald, where he remained for the rest of his career.

East was undergoing surgery for facial cancer. He was declared brain dead Monday after brain scans were negative. Another scan Tuesday also was negative. The life support system that sustained East was turned off at 2:47 p.m. EST Wednesday.

East was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. With him were his wife of 39 years, Tina, and his seven children. East worked as a Herald photographer from 1951 until he retired earlier this year.
