Poll Says Stevenson Party Choice for 1956 Nomination 1 By ARTHUR EDSON Washington, Dec. 29 overwhelming majority of Democratic leaders believe Adlai Stevenson is now the best bet to win their presidential nomination again in 1956. The Associated PVess today toted up the results of a poll of 126 Democratic governors, state chairmen and members of the national committee. THE DEMOCRATS were asked: do you consider the leading candidate, in your state, for the presidential Their replies were broken down this way: Stevenson 76 Kefauver 5 Lausche 3 Harriman 3 Others, or no comment 39 Yes the poll as one-sided as it might seem.

SOME WHO voted for Stevenson stressed that his margin is so slight it may vanish before the convention is held in August. At least five politicians make up their minds, and decided the race was a tossup between Stevenson and Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee. Sen. Stuart Symington of Missouri, Gov.

Robert B. Meyner of New Jersey and Gov. G. Mennen Williams of Michigan. If the politicians are right, the 1956 race will be a replay of 1952, with Stevenson, the former governor of Illinois, against President Eisenhower, the former general of the army.

Yesterday, in a similar poll of Republicans, the question was asked: Eisenhower again? Their answer, by a big majority, was yes. SOME SAMPLES of support: Jack Toole, chairman of the Montana state committee: have just finished a tour of the state and I find that Adlai Stevenson is the most popular man right Tom E. Brown, speaking as an individual and not as the New i Mexico chairman: is Gov. Averell Harriman of New so far out in front that others York, an candidate so have a look-in in New far, got but three votes. One of these was from Carmine G.

De Sapio, who, as a national committeeman and chief of Tammny Hall, should have considerable to say about howr New 96 votes are cast in the convention. Gov. Frank J. Lausche of Ohio, running both as a favorite son and for the U. S.

Senate, picked up a home vote, plus one from Massachusetts and one from Texas. OTHERS mentioned presidential possibilities: Sen. Lyndon Johnson of Texas, Sen. Marvin Griffin of Georgia: would say Stevenson first and Lausche second and even classify the other is, Kefauver and Harriman. HOW some of the split verdicts looked: Gov. Raymond Gary of Oklahoma: believe it is a tossup in Oklahoma right now between Stevenson and Harriman with Harriman on the gain. Kefauver has some pretty strong support, Ward Clark, South Dakota chairman: a tossup between Stevenson and Kefauver with Stevenson Mrs. Inez Scholl, Indiana national committeewoman: talked to think very even in Indiana between Stevenson, Kefauver and AND THIS is what saying about the other candidates: Mrs.

Myrtle McIntyre, New Hampshire national committeewoman: think anybody can touch Kefauver in New George Sandlin, Texas state chairman: has a slight edge now on Stevenson, with Kefauver third, Harriman Michael H. Prendergast, New York state chairman: party has many good men and proud of them, but convinced that the governor (Harriman) is in the front AND DOWN in West Point, Tom Tubb, the state chairman, pondered the question and said: of that crew (Kefauver, Stevenson, Harriman or Lausche), Stevenson would be the strongest. But I think any of them would be the Democratic Tubb prediction: sort of look for Sen. Lyndon Johnson or Sen. Richard Russell.
