2 ALAMOGORDO (N.M.) DAILY NEWS Thursday, March 17, 1966 NIT Semi's Are Tonight BYU Is Favored In Meet NEW YORK (AP) Army, the surprise team of the tourney, gets its big chance against the favored Brigham Young Cougars in the semifinals tonight of the National Invitation college basketball tournament. Villanova, on an eight-game winning streak and triumphant in 12 oT its last 13 games, is expected to down NYU in the other semi before a capacity turnout of 18,400 at Madison Square Garden. The winners meet at 2 p.m., ESf Saturday in the championship game which will be nationally televised over CBS. The losers play for third place at noon Saturday. Virtually everyone wrote off chances when the West Point Cadets lost sturdy 6-foot-6 Mike Silliman, their star, because of a knee injury near the gpd of the regular season.

But another senior, 0-foot-3 Bill Helkie of South Bend, fetepped into the breach and the Black Knights of the Hudson Upset Manhattan and San Francisco to reach the round of four. Helkie tossed in 27 points against Manhattan and 34 against the Dons. The fired-up Cadets are expected to have tougher going against the BYU Cougars led by Dick Nemelka and Jeff Congdon. The top-seeded Cougars ahowed a lot of poise in defeating Temple in the quarter-finals Monday. Army has an added incentive to upset the Cougars.

The Cadets lost in the NIT semifinals the last two years. On each occasion the teams that beat them, Bradley and St. John's, went on to win the championship. Thus the Cadets figure that if they overcome BYU they'll win the championship against either Villanova or NYU.
