Sawyers Shock KHS, 20-6, in DCSL Opener BY IRA FUSFELD KINGSTON Saugerties High School, its offense eating up 177 yards of Dietz Stadium turf, and its defense blanking Kingston passing and running attack, dumped the mistake- prone Maroons. 20-6. Saturday in the Dutchess County Scholastic League's gridiron opener. A capacity crowd, of which many believed Kingston would sweep its neighbors from the north off the field, sat stunned as the home team stalled constantly on offense, several times by their own fumbles and Saugerties interceptions. The Sawyers, a team filled with seniors, but one which was considered inexperienced nonetheless, played a near perfect ball game.

Rarely going to the air, Saugerties managed to pick up yardage on highly regarded defensive line with superb blocking and hard nosed running. Still, it was because of Maroon miscues that Saugerties got in position to score. The first touchdown came following an intercepted pass, the second on a fumble recovery, and the third shortly after a bobbled ball. The first quarter was scoreless, but it provided an indication of things to come. Kingston attempted to put the ball in the air the first six times it moved from scrimmage.

On the first series of downs, two of quarterback Walt Houghtaling's throws were incomplete. The other time he was dumped for a loss. On second series, Houghtaling lost 13 yards behing the line, got eight back on his first completed pass, then tossed another incomplete. Saugerties, meanwhile, managed to move the ball from its 21 to the Kingston 44. all on the ground, before signal caller Billy Maines tried a screen pass wh'ch Jim Milano intercepted, ending the Sawyer threat.

But Saugerties had showed that it could move. When Kingston took the ball ifor the third time it went to the ground and did get a first! down. But then Houghtaling went back to the air only to have Bob Heincck pick off of the pass. Saugerties took possession on its 47. It moved to the Kingston 44 and on fourth down had to punt.

But on what proved to be a key play, a Kingston penalty for holding on the punt gave Saugerties a first down on the Maroon 39. From there, Jim Whiteford ran to the 31. Four plays later, now" in the second quarter, still on the 31, Maines handed off to Mark Salinivich, who in turn gave it to Wb't'Tord on a reverse. The good-looking Sawyer back went around right end for the touchdown. I The TD came on a surprise play on a fourth and seven Kingston took the ensuing kickoff and tried to stick to the ground.

It moved to 25. Then Houghtaling threw what looked to be a touchdown pass in the direction of Joey Fay. The throw, however, was short and was knocked down by Heineck. On the next play.jiight end. A pass from Maines Houghtaling.
