MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 1957 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH PAGE MdSVSfff Upwcr Vlioii Events SEE YOU IN PEN, Cttt OP BACK-TO-SCHOOL KTOS The kid, about 8, said, "See you in the 1 And he did mean school. Every year the atmosphere changes almost urmotSceably and on the Monday before Labor Day kids are analyzing theeir back-to- school positions. This kid happened to be standing in front of Block's on College avenue when he made the announcement about seeing his buddy in the pen. It was the type of thing that the rules say you should discourage hut it always has been a problem to divorce adult Instituted rules from the rules which kids estab lish about these things. Every adult was a kid at one time and he has a hard time nol remembering it.

The young fellow at Block's started the reporter on one of his searches. Kids to get in formation out of because they are among the world's most hones creatures. This year, it might be said t( start, the hnavy vote goes for the kiris who think going back is school is not only a bore but a horror. Bui, of course, there were the usual one or two who couldn't wait for the bell. With a spotty academic background, especially in the elementary years, the reporter is always awed by these kids.

This little girl said she was going shopping today for school clothes she just couldn't wait until schi'nl opened so she could show ime, as long as people understood what he was saying. It went like that. Seven youngsters were, ahem, slyly asked, their opinions about returning to school. Four were not only against it but. with a little prodding they might have been for the dissolution of the country's entire school system.

As long as a double negative still gets the poinl across, why worry? One, the girl, couldn't wait. The other two, one a boy, were down Ihe middle on the question. The boy couldn't wait for the meeting with his oid pals. He looked on studies as a required payment for the privilege of rounding up in one small school yard, some 50 boys in his age bracket. It doesn't look like a good year for the teachers.

Last year about half the kids talked to- were anxious to get their fuel back under the desk. This year. well. But to worry about it don't do no good. HERMAN BOTT BETTER AFTER IN STORK Herman Bott, 1817 Clawson St in Alton Memorial Hosplla Upper njury.
