THE STAFFORDSHIRE WEEKLY SENTINEL FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 23 1968 6 Peter Record Review STAFFORDSHIRE WEEKLY SENTINEL IN ITS 113th YEAR OF CONTINUOUS PUBLICATION Head Office: Hanley Btoke-on-Trant ninnom i etoke Mi-Trw" 2951 1 Tlt(rohl Address sentinel Hanley RYAN LATEST RELEASE COULD GO FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 23rd 1966 THE TOP The master plan The Rev Malcolm Sinclair a former pupil of Stone Grammar School who preached at St Church Stone on Sunday pictured with his wife their baby Andrew and his parents Mr and Mrs Sinclair of 52 Princes-street Stone Mr Sinclair has been working in a London parish for the last two years SENTRY BOX not to be allowed to close down the station In the view of the Ministry of Transport closure would cause hardship to the users admittedly small in number as no alternative services would be available Defeated over their plan BR may yet find cause for satisfaction One of these years when nothing moves on roads that have been choked to death they are likely to find that un economic lines and stations have become economic after all Not all stations have been as fortunate as Norton Bridge In the decisions announced this week by the Minister the Harrogate to Northallerton line was closed as was the Buxton to Millers Dale line They were among the lines which were considered to have their social and economic RIP Return of the waistcoat REPAID HIS BENEFACTORS HEN three of The Hollies get together to pen a number just for those talented Ryan Twins you can bet that the result will add up to strong hit parade material the story behind this latest release from Paul and Barry and it has the kind of hit sound that first established the twins on the disc scene Ex-Searcher Chris Curtis produced the disc which begins with a dramatic drum roll before Paul and Barry harmonise against a catchy guitar and string backing The plans to promote You Ever Loved are big Look for the Decca label F12494 Could be a number one I always thought that Alan Price was a nice young man He wrote A Wonderful for our tiny Scots lass LULU He also produced the disc (Decca F12491) Lulu I must say gives one of her happiest per- Macclesfield Grammar School So in 1810 John Jackson entered Brazenose College Oxford where he studied the classics and divinity before graduating three years later In 1815 he was ordained in the Church of England and was appointed curate at Christ Church Macclesfield With interest Two years later he moved to Witney in Oxfordshire and at the same time was appointed perpetual curate of Pott Shrigley a living in the gift of Edward Downes It was about this time that he married a daughter of Mr Molineux of Mace by whom he had 1 1 children Shortly afterwards he became curate at Bowden near Altrincham There he eked out his meagre clerical stipend MAINLY At present Professor of WITH INTEREST again A powerful week indeed on the singles front Tear (Philips BF 1514) has everything one would expect from this trio It did not take me long to find an unusual single Unusual and catchy enough to hit big exciting group THE HUNTERS bow in on the RCA label with Spy and Ste what I mean about unusual It is a mixture of beat and comedy Catchy beat opening with some great guitar work soon leads into a real Russian-style rave-up and to cap it all a neat Niet at the end for good measure The piano styling of ROGER WILLIAMS weaves a dramatic pattern around the title song from the Royal Performance film Born on London HLR 1007 The single is already a chart climber in America Another interesting story JOHNNY DEVLIN most outstanding pop composer he wrote more than 10 hit records last year alone has cut his first disc in Britain He hopes naturally that his CBS release Strength Heart and will make him a star on both sides of the world (202339) Born in New Zealand where he had the distinction of winning the first ever Gold Disc of that record industry he also penned Patsy Ann first Australian hit and wrote for Eartha Kitt You Are My Nobody sings s0 evocatively of broken hearts and the hurtful side of love than TERESA DUFFY and the tears are in full spate on her latest CBS single Free To (202298) I can almost see the tears streaming down the pretty cheeks of this 25-years-old Donegal girl as she sings this sad and mournful love-lost ballad Teresa once told me that she had sung in almost every country in the world and recently has been busy cheering up our troops in Cyprus Singapore and other parts Only eight singles of the many I received for review this week were deposited in my waste-bin as rubbish This is a clear indication that it has been a good week for new material But knowing my luck at forecasting hits I would expect all eight to make the Top Ten 0NE imagines that the first reaction of local authorities in the area covered by the Stoke-on-Trent master plan will be only over our dead It may be exactly that of course The overall trend in Industry in commerce in government is to centralise The smaller unit is on the way out The private grocer on the corner surrenders to the supermarket chain and the chain in turn sells out to its mammoth rivals who can afford the luxury and await the eventual profits of a take-over In the sphere of local government it seems to be a case of the larger the unit the more the scale of efficiency That must be the interpretation of the comment of the Town Clerk of Stoke-on-Trent Mr Keith Robinson who says of the city plan: This is a real attempt to provide new areas of local authority administration The city area is only part of a composite pattern and the plan involves the amalgamation of several other local And for good measure: This plan reflects the general trend towards larger authorities and the sir ability in this motorised age of having larger and more efficient units of local i ng non-committal about that Nor about the plan The audacity of wishing to include the county town and of ignoring present county boundaries by straying info Cheshire and Shropshire and of thinking in terms of an administrative area containing three-quarters of a million people What next What indeed The suggestions of other local authorities will be gathered by the Royal Commission on Local Government and given due weight in the balance WHAT THEIR EVENTUAL VERDICT WILL BE IS GUESS Defeat for BR VTORTON Bridge has fought the octopus and won British Railways are waistcoat would be a boon and a blessing in these days of alternate surfeit and slimming Much of the increase in crime to-day can be blamed upon the two-piece suit and the abandonment of th waistcoat With the disappearance of the latter garment pickpockets came into their own Years agal the light-fingered gentry had to be really expert in their chosen profession and consequently their numbers were fewer But not any more Anybody can pick modem pockets They are all on the outside hang loosely open and are so visible that a trained eye can assess their contents at a glance They are both accessible and vulnerable A good pickpocket deserved his success if he could tease a pound note out of tight-fitting waistcoat without the knowledge And there were four such pockets each self-sealing every time the wearer breathed in Thus on the rare occasions when we had more than one ten-bob or pound note we shared them out among the waistcoat pockets To-day we marvel at the pickpockets who can remove a braces or his wristwatch without him knowing Such feats are play however against getting a folded pound note out of a fat waistcoat pocket So much so that insurance companies could reasonably reduce their premiums for personal theft risk to those who never go out without their waistcoats Dignity And do not let us forget the dignity a well-fitting waistcoat given to a man What a setting for a watch-chain How much more imposing is a man so apparelled and how much more confidence does he Inspire councillors alderman and Lord Mayors even Members of Parliament and Cabinet ministers would give a much stronger impression of ability and old-fashioned dedication to duty if they all wore waistcoats I speak of males only of course The ladies will have to make do with corsets JAMES WILLIAMS "THE waistcoat is coming back into fashion Thank goodness for that It has been absent and off our persons too long The state of half undress which idle men and slovenly have effected for the last 20 years or so is it is to be hoped abqut to disappear There was a time when roughly dressed young people were in their cradles when men never removed their waistcoats except in the privacy of their own homes and only rarely then The waistcoat like the good manners of those days was the mark of a gentleman and both high and lowly liked to think themselves gentlemen Not all humbug Men took off their jackets only in the garden at the seaside when resting at home or to fight But the waistcoat stayed on for it was the garment of respectability So highly regarded was the waistcoat that if a man was seen without one it was assumed he was mad or drunk that he was just going to bed or had just got up Nor was this all humbug for besides being dressy the waistcoat was among the most useful sartorial devices of man The increasing protrusion of stomach so noticeable among middle-aged men to-day owes its presence to the two-piece suit For male figure control the waistcoat never had an equal Not only is it better than any corset but it is a body belt that combines efficiency with comfort The numerous and closely set together buttons when fastened one after another bring a gently persuasive but irresistible pressure to bear and comfortably compel the body to a flattering and healthy looking size Crime curb In many waistcoats and not the most expensive at that accommodation was provided for the exigencies of fat men who became thin and of thin men who became fat Equipped at the back with a strap and buckle which gave infinite adjustment over many inches of waistline the LJISTORY is full of the stories of men who have risen from humble beginningSi to the very heights of success But very few have shown as much integrity and as much gratitude to their benefactors as Jackson Jackson was born in Harrop Wood Cottage in the delightful village of Pott Shrigley that nestles under the slopes of the Pennines a few miles outside Macclesfield His father worked a small farm leased from Edward Downes then the most influential man in Pott Shrigley Like many good landlords Downes was the first person to notice the potential abilities in the shy retiring boy whose sensitive gentle disposition endeared him to his landlord jThey servej the churchj Miss MacDonald of 272 Waterloo-road Burslem has attended St Church 5 Burslem for 56 years ever since she moved into the area to teach at Sneyd Scripture Union and Treasurer of the Fellowship At one time she was Sunday School Superin- tendent She attends as many church meetings and functions as she is able 5 to and is a regular worshipper She retired 15 years ago as Headmistress of Goldenhill School TO formances on a disc that swings along with a great backing of saxes piano and drums provided by the Alan Price Set This mu9t be another chart climber Top five I hope A newcomer to the Reprise label is one of most popular ballad singers BUDDY' GRECO and he celebrates his first release on the label with an album Band and Two of the tracks have been cholsen to issue as a single They are and to be found on Reprise Rij 23053 Buddy Greco has always been a good entertainer even when he was very young and led a cocktail lounge trio behind a bar in Minneapolis He used to make a whole half-hour session out of a medley of his hit at that time Ooh Look a There She by coachingepupils and by means of the fees contrived to repay with interest the money so kindly advanced several years previously by his Macclesfield benefactors Soon he came to the notice of Bishop Law who in 1821 appointed him to the living at Over another small village not far from Altrincham The annual stipend was £120 At the time of his appointment there was no vicarage but Jackson soon remedied this and in addition rebuilt part of the farmhouse on the glebe lands There he appears to have stayed for the rest of his life one of the most popular vicars in the history of the village He lived to see four of his sons pass through Oxford to become like himself ordained ministers in the established church PRICE ABOUT She won this title at Sutton i Coldfield on Saturday night when she was awarded the for the best female performance at the end of the River Deep Mountain High (London HAU 8298) and Classic Roy Orbison (London HAU 8297) IKE and TINA TURNER flew into London this week to begin a 12-concert tour of major cities with the Rolling Stones They will also be appearing on television in Ready Steady on September 30th There are 12 tracks on this Phil Spec tor-produced album and right from the opening bars of River Deep the accent is on the kind of vocal and musical excitement that combines with the Spector-sound to produce an explosive impact on the ears and the senses The vocal magic of ROY ORBISON on all 12 tracks of his new album I think you will agree that much of strength lies in the fact that he writes most of his material himself 10 of the tracks in this particular case Also it is interesting to note that of the 10 only family circumstances could afford no further educational indulgence His father had him apprenticed to a local weaver during the early 1790s But Jackson was the type of boy who would have won the approval of Samuel Smiles the author of On every available opportunity he walked to either Macclesfield or Stockport to browse through the books for sale on market stalls Although he could not afford to buy any he became widely read In his other spare moments he wandered 0iver the hills and through the woods surrounding Pott Shrigley Often he was moved to commit his thoughts to paper his writ-lings taking the form of poetry One of his verses addressed to a robin came into the possession of an unnamed man from Macclesfield He was impressed by what he read and determined to seek cut the au'thor Imagine his surprise when he discovered that the writer was little metre than a simple rustic who earned his living as a weaver At Oxford This did not deter him from showing the poem to a
