Last season Maris finally finished with 61 homers to become the first man ever to tap the mark of 60 hit by Babe Ruth of the Yankees in 1927. Though Maris had a 162-game schedule compared to 154 games for the Babe, he did finish with the top total.

Maris recently has raised bis current home run output to 23 as he shoots for another Rutn record of 114 home runs in two consecu tive seasons. Ruth followed his production of 60 homers in VJ27 witn 5-t the next year for the top total oi 114 homers in two seasons. Ruth also holds the other two top marks of 113 with 54 in 1920 and 59 the nx: year, of 104 for 1926-27 when he hit totals of 47 and 60. So Maris has less tnan half a season left in which to hit 31 homers to beat the Babe's two-year mark. Other two-year sluggers with high marks were Jimmy Foxx.

106 in 1932-33; Ralph Kiner, 101 in 1949-1950; Maris, 100 in 1360-01; Ted Kluszewski, 69, in 1954 55 Johnny Mize, 91 in 1947-45; and Ernie Banks, 90 in 1957-53. The St. Louis Cardinals will play a rare week-day game in daylight Thursday when they meet the Chicago Cubs at 12:30 p.m. In Busch Stadium. Christopher High likely will name its new coaches this weekend.

The names of the new men will not be familiar to most area sports fans. The vacancies occured when Vic Renaud, football-track coach, moved to Deerfield as track coach and cage coach Woody Burnett moved to Benton as freshman coach. The St. Louis Cards have played five extra inning games this year and have won oil of them. They have also won as many games from the Braves and Pirates in their most recent series as they had previously won all season.

Fred Orlofsky of SIU is still in Europe competing in various gym meets after the U. S. team finished sixth in the world meet at Prague. The American team defeated a German team Sunday. The Washington Senators have sold pitcher Ray Rippelmeyer, former SIU athlete from Valmeyer to San Diego of the Pacific Coast League.

Rip got only one starting chance against the Minnesota Twins and shutout artist Cami-lo Pascual, who pitched a shutout that day against the Senators. The Yanks helped swell the Kansas Ciu coffers by attracting a similar crowd in the Missouri city.

The naming of Bill Merkley as Iiad football coach at Harrisburg completes a cycle which is unprecedented in the history of the South Seven Conference. Every ifague school has at least one new coach and all except Benton have "i2v head coaches, some schools in more than one sport. Benton's only change was the appointment "i Woody Barnett as freshman coach replacing Jack Archer. FN ARNIE'S ARMY Arnold Palmer, currently the most popular golfer in the world because of his colorful come-from-behind rallies, draws a large crowd even for a practice Newtown Square, July 17 (AP) Even for a practice round, under threatening skies, when it doesn't count, Arnold Palmer has the golf fans swarming around him. Hundreds waited for him Mon day when the Masters and British Open champion arrived at the Aronomink golf course to look over the lay-out It was the first; i time he lifted a club since romp ing to the British title last Friday. Palmer is one of 176 pros who will tee off Thursday in the National PGA tournament. It's the one major title that has eluded him. He said he was happy to get back to the larger American ball and planned to get as much practice with it as possible before the tournament.

He said "it was tough to control the little ball" in the British Open. Palmer's fans, sometimes called "Arnie's Army," followed the Pennsylvanian as he played his way through the course. He tried several approaches and several putts at each hole, stopping momentarily to dictate notes to his caddie. "I haven't touched a ball or club since I left Troon (Scotland) onj Friday," Palmer confessed. 'It was just two days off, but it was strange on Saturday and Sunday." Admirers followed Palmer from the moment he registered at the PGA trailer.

They watched Intently as he drove from the practice tee and surrounded him for autographs when he had finished.
