than that of the Cleik of the Circuit Court To this official is entrusted the duty of recording our deeds our mortgages and our Court rec ords He has the custody and care of all papers relating to our land and prop erly titles He issues licenses of all sorts to traders duckers etc In the past twelve years and particularly since the war this latter matter of licenses has incr ased enormously owing to the fact that many new enterprises now pay a license which formerly were not required to do so addition the Clerk is called upon to answer innumerable questions concerning the owner ship of property matters of credit and property lines will thus be seen at a glance that the position tequires either special fitness and experience or in lieu of that one who has shown in his business career those qualities which would indicate to the people generally that he can readily adapt himself to the tequirements of the office and carry it along to the satisfaction of the people Republicans we feel took all of these matters into consideration in their selection of a candidate for this important office and in the nomina tion of Mr Harry Ward of Jarrettsville they have named a man whose whole previous career gives promise of developing into a most competent coun ty official to his standing in his own local community and in the county gen erally there is no doubt or years he has been County who sen ed as a member of the House of Delegates twice as Senator and three times as a member of Congress from this district Mr rank Baker is 44 years old and is one of the lead ing voting business men of the county and like his distin guished uncle has been keenly interested in public affairs The first time Mr Baker consented to be a candidate for public office was in the fall of 1915 when he aspired to represent Harford county in the House of Delegates won a signal victory receiving 289G votes and how well and ably represented the county in the House during the session of 191C and during the special session in 1917 con tinues fresh in the minds of our people In 1917 he ran against the late Senator Royston Stiller for State Senator and after a gallant fight was de feated bv a small majority of 278 votes This was a re markable run in view of the fact that at that time the Dem ocratic party had hn affiliated majority of more than 1000 voters Mr Baker is a member of the Aberdeen Church and is a young man of the highest character and typifies the very best citizenship of the State The secret of Mr success lies in his simplicity and his courage He is not afraid to express his views and vote his sentiments He is a close friend of the farmer and canner and takes pleasure in looking after their interests at all times and is keenly interested in the moral uplift of
