Ethel Noyes Lewis Funeral Services Held At St. John's Church I Mrs. Ethel Noyes Lewis. 53, daughter of Frank B. Noyes, chairman of the board of The Evening Star Newspaper and the late i Mrs.

Noyes, died yesterday at the Emergency Hospital. Mrs. home was at 1324 Twenty-eighth street N.W. She was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage last Wednesday. She was a native and lifelong resident of Washington.

Educated at Farmington School, she was married in 1926 to Sir Willmott Lewis, Washington correspondent of the London Times. They were divorced at Lake Worth, in 1939. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Chevy Chase and the Sulgrave Clubs. Surviving are her father.

Mr. Noyes, and a son, Willmott Lewis, a student at Yale. Funeral services were held this afternoon at St. John's Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square. Burial was private in Rock Creek Cemetery.

KNIGHT. Dr. Albert F. Woods, Former Maryland U. President, Dies at 81 Dr.

Albert Fred Woods, 81, former i president of the University of Maryland, who held many offices in the Agriculture Department, died today at Prince Georges General Hospital after a five-month illness. He suffered a stroke last Friday. Dr. Woods lived at 4001 Quintana street, Hyattsville. He became executive office of the Maryland State Board of Agriculture and president of the University of Dr.

Maryland in 1917 when it was Maryland State College. During his nine years in office he brought the college up to a Class A rating. Dr. Woods began directing scientific work at the Department of Agriculture in 1926 with the rank then of assistant secretary. In this capacity he was placed in charge of the Graduate School of the department until 1941 when he was made educational adviser.

The school offered undergratuate and graduate courses in a variety of subjects to Federal employes. Retired in 1946. Dr. Woods retired December 31, 1946, and devoted his time to research on the nature and control of plant disease until his illness. He did pioneer research in the nature of mosaic disease to tobacco plants in 1898.

Dr. Woods was born in Belvidere, 111., and grew up on his father's cattle ranch. After punching cows he went to the University of Nebraska and received his B. S. degree.

He was assistant botanist at the university for three years and in 1894 he became assistant chief and physiologist of the Division of Vegetable Pathology for the Department of Agriculture. He was later assistant chief of the Division of Plant Physiology and Pathology and in 1900 became chief of the division and assistant chief of the Bureau of Plant Industry. He was principal pathologist from 1934 to 1938. In 1905 he was United States delegate to both the International Institute of Agriculture in Rome and the International Botanical Congress in Vienna. Dr.

Woods was dean of the Minnesota State Agriculture College and director of the experiment station there from 1910 to 1917. Held Other Offices. Besides serving as United States delegate in Rome and Vienna, Dr. Woods was president of the first International Conference on Agriculture. Forestry and Animal Husbandry held in Washington in 1930 and was president of the Land Grant College Association of the United States in 1925.

He was general chairman of the Committees on Food Production and Conservation of the Maryland Council of Defense in 1917 and was a member of the Botanical Society of America; American Society of Naturalists; American Academy, Political and Social Science; Botanical Society of Washington; Washington Academy of Sciences; the National Research Council; a former president of the American Horticultural Society, and a member of the Cosmos and University Clubs here. Dr. Woods wrote numerous reports and articles in publications of the Department of Agriculture and scientific journals and also was author of plant pathology in the Encyclopedia Americana. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Bertha G.

Ethel Bender Rites To Be Held in Kitzmiller Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Rafter Bender, 70, great granddaughter of Thomas Wilson, one of the first settlers in Garrett County, were to be held this afternoon in Kitzmiller, Md. Mrs. Bender died Friday in Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, after an illness of several weeks. She was a lifelong resident of Kitzmiller and was the daughter of John H.

47, Associated Press staff writer here who was formerly chief of the AP bureau at Newark, N. died yesterday of pneumonia at Homeopathic Hospital. He had worked until I Thursday and was taken to the hospital Saturday. Mr. Conner had been with the Washington AP bureau since January.

He lived at the Houston Hotel. A native of Washington State, he began his newspaper career on the I Times in Olympia, and worked on newspapers in California before he joined the AP 19 years ago. He was a field representative the Midwest for the AP at one time and for 10 years was chief of the Newark bureau. He served in the Navy during World War I as a yoeman, first class. Survivors are his widow, Mrs.

Loretta Conner, of Washington; a daughter, Kay; his mother, Mrs. Ella Conner, and two brother. Harold and Herbert, all four of Montrose, Calif. Funeral services have yet to be arranged. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.

Edward Soghomonian Dies; Keystone Hotel Manager Edward O. Soghomonian, 57, man- ager of the Keystone Hotel for the i last 17 years, died unexpectedly yes- terday at his residence at the hotel, 714 Seventeenth street N.W. Mr. Soghomonian was born in Armenia and came to the United States in 1911. He worked in a factory at Bridgeport, and during World War I served in the Army.

After the war he came to Washington and became manager of the Allies Hotel, formerly in the 400 block of Pennsylvania avenue N.W. In 1931 be was made manager of the Keystone. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Marian Soghomonian: four children, Edward and Rosie, students at Gordon Junior High School: Agnes, a student at Western, and John, who attends Grant Elementary. His mother and brother, who live; in France, and a sister in Rhode! Island also survive.
