SCUNTHORPE EVENING TELEGRAPH Monday July 15 1996 in Fall steel levels National interest in Kirton land By PAUL HART UK steel production in June this year was fractionally lower (down 06 per cent) than the amount produced in May 363800 tonnes in June and 366100 tonnes in May but was significantly higher (by 62 per cent) than in June 1995 (342500) reflecting a return to more normal production levels Comparing the figures for the first six months of 1996 with the same period in 1995 UK steel production is down by 23 per cent this year mainly reflecting the distortion caused by unusually high production levels in January 1995 due to continuous working through the 19941995 Christmas and new year holiday period FARMLAND country cottages and commercial buildings worth around £750000 go under the hammer on Wednesday in the first general property auction in North Lincolnshire for almost a decade The event is attracting national interest because ofthe inclusion of 21 1 acres of investment farmland near Kirton Lindsey currently owned by Blue Circle Industries PLC In another return to tradition the sale is to be held in the Angel Suite at Brigg the former Angel Hotel which for more than a century was the hub of local farming life and the place where the farming community's auctions were usually held Country cottage Apart from the investment farmland at Kirton on offer will be a country cottage with almost five acres at Barrow Mere a block of former stone cottages at Winterton 50 acres of land at South Killingholme and smaller parcels of land at Middle Rasen (15 acres and five acres) Laceby (12 acres) and Barrow Mere (nine acres) The commercial property in the sale includes a house and former haulage yard at New Holland and a shop in Goole Giles Johnston the partner in charge of DOM's Agriculture Division which is organising the sale commented: 'Property auctions are coming back into fashion for the first time since the late 1980s when the boom was in full swing The market is now very bullish and there is a shortage of available agricultural land so there is no doubt that auction is the right way to sell at the moment It is the certain method of establishing the full market value "Having said that it is still quite unusual for an investment property to be sold by auction and that is why we are expecting it to attract attention from 9 wide range of people The land is a single block alongside the A15 and is let under a full agricultural tenancy It is essentially bare farmland with no buildings which have to be maintained a tidy simple investment "So it could be snapped up by a stockbroker from the south or a local investor or someone in farming farmers are today increasingly looking at investment land We are expecting it to make in the region of £1500 an acre which means we are looking for in excess of Looking at the other lots he said: "The 50 acres at South Killingholme is with vacant possession so that will probably make in excess of £150000 We are expecting quite a lot of interest in Wayside Cottage at Barrow Mere It is a super spot The house is a former farmhouse with a range of outbuildings standing in 48 acres The property is in need of renovation and modernisation but that is reflected in the pre-sale estimate of £75000 Talking about the decision to hold the auction at the Angel Suite he said: Angel has great connotations for the local fanning community The Angel Hotel and the Corn Exchange were always the hub of the area so far as the farmers were concerned Now following the renovation it is a very smart venue it is an absolutely first class location for the sale" Pollen Count Mr Johnston and the farmland which is expected to make in excess of £300000 TODAY'S pollen count in Scunthorpe is expected to rise
