Others who know of the arrangement are air. Tucker, Diana's farmer father, whose admiration for Stephen is great; Stephen's stepmother, Ellen Curt, who hopes the couple trill come to love each other; Stephen's spiteful, spoiled sister, Adcla, who despises Diana; Richard Thorpe, Diana's former employer, who dismissed her when she resisted his advances; Evalyn Thorpe, his beautiful blind, wife. The love of Stephen for Eralyn, whom he and Phil Bruce have known nince childhood, is understandable to Diana. She and Evalyn have become fast friends.

LUNCHEON WITH EVALYN CHAPTER XIII Thursday Diana went to keep her luncheon engagement with Evalyn Thorpe. They lived in a fine old house on Peyton Square which enclosed a lovely park. The big Curt residence in Green street was only five blocks away and Diana walked the distance, reveling in the crisp air and thin winter sunshine. On the morning after her insolent outburst, Adela had come to Diana's room wearing a disarming air of meekness. In quite the most polite tones she had ever used to Diana, she begged her pardon humbly for her behavior of the night before.

Diana, genuinely surprised and touched, assured the unhappy girl she had quite forgotten the incident. After Adela left the room, spurred by a sudden generous impulse, Diana ran after her to ask her to attend a matinee with her that afternoon. Perhaps, she thought, if she exerted herself a little more, she and Adcla might be friends after all. too, Richard's words, "Stephen has always been madly in love with my wife!" JT was this remark that closed Diana's lips when she wanted to ask Stephen to tell her more of Evalyn. It had seemed like intruding into the privacy of a shrine, a sanctuary.

If he really loved Evalyn, she could not blame him, for she was certainly the most beautiful person she -had ever known; but Stephen's lips remained closed the night Diana had mentioned the blind girl to him. She dwelt upon his "There is no one whom I care to make my Easy to understand, if his heart was in the keeping of Evalyn Thorpe. Evalyn told her a great deal about Stephen, too, whom she had known since childhood, speaking of him with warm admiration. "There is not a finer mind anywhere than Stephen's," she said. "I hope you appreciate what a treasure you've married.

And I'm sure he must love you very much!" Diana felt like a traitor, but Evalyn attributed her confused reply to the natural reticence of a bride. Diana wondered what Evalyn would think a few short NEW I. S. C. BUILDING PROBLEM FOR STATE (Cohtinuea irocu Pasre u'ne) come before the committee rather "than take upon your own shoulders" the responsibility for can- celling the bids.

Other committee members pointed out that the legislature specified the building must not cost more than $105,000. Dean. H. H. Kildee of the agriculture said college officials want to study the revised plans, which would shorten one of the wings, but would finish the second floor.

These plans would take care of the present student enrollment but would leave no rocm for future expansion, he said. Several Alternates The third set of plans would include several alternates, and these will be considered by the committee before letting a contract. There was some question whether the board could re-open the second set of bids and bring them be- fore the committee for consider- ation along with the new plans, i There also was some speculation i whether the committee would have to take action on the revised plans if the bids fall below or only if they are higher.
