Ten days hence, a new set of statistics will be added to the Motion Picture Academy's 33 year records.

There will be much hoopla about the winners. I've always felt the losers deserved some notice, too. This year's hapless hopefuls shouldn't feel too bad; they're inj good company. Greta Garbo is considered by many the screen's all-time great actress she never won an Oscar. Nor did Charlie Chaplin, Hollywood's top comedian.

Nor Fred Astairc, greatest of the musical comedy stars. Yes, I know all three Oscars. But they were "honorary" awards, given to salve the Academy's conscience for such oversights. What about Cary Grant? he remains Oscar-less. Irene Dunne, Deborah Kerr, Rosalind Barbara Stanwyck, Charles Boyer, Fred MacMurray, William Powell.

Henry Fonda and John Barry-more are among the other distinguished performers who never won the big prize. And hat about the winners? Five have won the best-actress award twice Bctte Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Luisc Rainer, Ingricl Bergman, and Vivien Leigh. Three have doubled for the best actor honor Fredrick March. Gar Cooper and Spencer Tracy. Walter Brcnnan i.s the only 7 Movie, "Dead Reckoning."
