An effort to curtail serving of wheat bread at least 15 per cent met with prompt sup port from diners in the majority of the dining rooms, hotels and clubs in the city. Corn, rye and graham bread substituted on the menus for rolls and white bread. Another saving: wa made on pies. In most of the restaurants pies with a top crust were discontinued for the day and only pumpkin and other "open face" pies were served. Apple dumplinsrs were lso tabooed, as were sweet rolls.

Cranshaw, vice president of the Virginia-Carolina Chemical Company, was placed on trial today charged with setting fire to the University of Virginia chemical laboratory and stealing about $2,500 worth of platinum. The host has been entirely rebuilt and refurnished and Its Interior Is more that of a passenger steamer than a tow-boat.

The staterooms and cabin are white enamelled, the latter even Is adorned with a rug. The stern wheel has been set bick nine inches, while the head has been raised six inches, a novelty on local rivers, which will allow the tooat to travel at full speed without swamping. All timbers are solid and seasoned oak. while the new machinery Is being placed by the Marine Manufacturing Company. The cylinders are 14-inch with a foui and one-half foot stroke, the Hornbeck cam and California cutoff being in-italled.

A new "shipping up" Jack and new stacks also will be installed this week. The boat has the) largest rudder power of any on Inland rivers. A gold leafed double-eagle is on the jack staff and the trimmings on the upper deck are also of gold leaf. Captain J. H.

Hudson, master of the boat, was in charge and supervised the rebuilding and also designed all new and labor-saving devices, his first consideration being for the workingman. His crew consists of David Aah worth, engineer, and J7iclc iM-June. mate. One of the new depart-m4t are the larg "bitts" on the forer castle, which are sheathed with steel plate and designed to withstand the shock of tr.e largest steel barges afloat. The boat li 117 feet long, 23 feet wide, four feet deep, 23 feet high and has a gross tonnage of 87.

Charles M. Fairman and "William H. Flint of Pittsburgh were appointed by the United States district court to make a survey of the ateamor Monitor, which sank in the Monongahela river opposite Charlerol. Their report will be filed with the court. Lieutenant Colonel Horton Stickle, district engineer, accompanied by Captain Warren Etaey of the Vesta Coal Company.

According to United States Engineer J- vv. Arras, tne surveys or the proposed locks and dams in the Allegheny river are practically completed. Soundings are being made at the proposed site of Lock and Dam No. 8. It Is expected the survey work on the proposed Ems-worth dam will be started next week.

The Pennsylvania Railroad Company has submitted its application to the lo cal engineers ror an exchange of property at Lock and Dam No. 3, Glen Osborne. Ohio river. The company intends to lower Its tracks, beginning at a point above that lock and extending for a distance of about three miles down stream to Shields station. The new Hne will eliminate grade crossings and also a steep grade which now exists at tnat point.
