lr iA I ilia Wil i S' My answer Billy Graham 1 DEAR DR GRAHAM: I have been a Christian but am 18 now and in college and I have decided to Eve it up for a while I don need God and anyway God just stands in the way of having fun Maybe some day turn back to God but for now I have decided to be independent MP DEAR MP: I wish you could sit down with me and read the letters I receive almost every day from people just like you who decided to shut God out of their lives and be independent from Him exception they have found it did not bring them lasting happiness and in many instances it has brought them great sorrow and devastation They didn't plan it this way of course they all believed that independence and freedom would bring them happiness But they have discovered through bitter personal experience that what they thought was only led to slavery slavery to self slavery to sin slavery to the lusts and desires of the flesh Not a one of them is glad they chose to leave God out of their lives You see God created you and your life is only complete when you live in a vital relationship with Him And He loves you why He has given certain moral laws to us because He knows that if we break them we will only hurt ourselves: be misled bythe lure Satan is putting before you Satan's promise to Adam and Eve was that they would be free but it was a lie (see Genesis 3) So are his promises to you because Satan a liar and the father of John 8: 44 1 Yes being a Christian often means you must go against the crowd but it also is the only path of lasting happiness Jesus said "I have come that they may have life and have it to the (John 10:10) pray er is that you will not forsake the truth of Christ jjut that you will discover the joy and excitement of living for Him Area churches concentration camp at lossenburg Germany His death less than a month before the end of World War II in Europe brought to an end a life filled with courage and deep reli gious commitment Bonhoeffer a German Protes tant pastor had been an early and vocal opponent to Hitler and the Nazis He had preached the need for Christians to identify with and protect Jews in the face? ot the increasingly rampant anti Semitism in pre war Germany He had chided religious leaders for failing to speak out and act against abuses When war came he had joined the underground and served as a double agent He had known of and had been willing' to partici pate in attempts to assassinate the Nazi leader Arrested in 1943 he had been a source of strength and encour agement for his fellow prisoners At the foot of the gallows he prayed the almost 50 years that I worked as a doctor I have hardly ever seen a man die so entirely submissive to the will of wrote a prison doctor Bonhoeffer's execution howev er did not stop the wordsand ideas Indeed they have reverberated throughout Christianity for near ly half a century and in their emphasis on an active socially conscious faith and a solidarity yvith the oppressed have had a profound impact on religious thinking and deeds At Christmas in 1942 in a letter to his family and members of the German Resistance movement Bonhoeffer wrote: have for once learned to see the great events of world history from be low from the perspective of the outcast the suspects the mal treated the powerless the op pressed the reviled in short from the perspective of those who This sentence is so key to an understanding of Bonhoeffer that it is quoted three times in the four page preface and 43 page introduction to a new book by two of the foremost Bonhoef fer scholars: Testament to reedom: The Essential Writings of Dietrich The book: the largest and most diverse collection of Bon writings in a single vofume was presented to the public recently for the Theological Seminary here The 579 page book which offi cially will be published by HarperSanrancisco later this month already has received wide praise including selection as for Novem ber by the Religious Book Club envisioned this as a book that a lay person could said Nelson in an interview last week the same time a book that could be used in univer sity or seminary The 66 year old Nelson has been studying Bonhoeffer for more than three decades original attraction was the story of life of a man who was willing to defy Hitler and Nazism Just the sheer drama of it arrested he said the years also been attracted to the contours of his thought i believed that Christianity as not simply 'a sys tem of belief but also as a life to be lived that evidence of Chris tianity is to be seen in daily In their introduction Kelly and Nelson write: prison Bon hoeffer accused religion of offer ing only an escapist flight the real world The churches he said were interested in fight ing only a rearguard action for survival and preservation of their privileges and Instead Bonhoeffer believed Christians are called to put them selves on the line the way he eventually put his life on the line he wrote the church only when it exists for Kelly and "Burton are examples of the breadth of appeal Kelly is Catholic Burton is a minister in the Evangelical Covenant Church influence has not simply
