The Lawyer and the General Almost Come to Blows Over the Former's Merciless Questioning. Gnerin Still Holds the Fort in Paris, But is Getting Short on Provisions. THE DREYFUS TRIAL. Rennes, August 24--True to his statement that he would have more questions to put to General Mercier, Labori at today's session of the Dreyfus court martial, got Mercier again on the stand and drove him to such a pass that for a moment it looked as though a personal encounter would take place between the men. One of the first witnesses, Colonel Maurel, president of the 1894 court martial, testified he had seen only one of the documents of the secret dossier.

He refused to tell which one and said Mercier probably knew more about the matter than he did. Mercier was then called to the stand. Labori began to question him concerning his part in bringing secret evidence before the court martial without the knowledge of the accused. "Did you order the secret dossier presented to the first court martiaP" asked Labori. "Yes," replied Mercier, "I take the entire responsibility." He said there was other evidence against the prisoner at the time of his arrest besides the borderau, Labori asked why this evidence was concealed from the present court, but Mercier hotly refused to reply.

Labori questioned Mercier about the contents of the borderau, Mercier insisting Dreyfus was in a position to deliver the documents named. Colonel Jouaust here tried to check the repetition of the old testimony whereupon Labori, referring dramatically to the shot which caused him to be absent for a week, insisted on a full explanation. He asked Mercier about the alleged thirty- five million francs syndicate to "do" Drey tus, which the witness in his first testimony had spoken of. Mercier: "De Freycinet told me formally of the existence of the syndicate." Labori: "How, formally?" Mercier protested against the lawyer's manner, saying he was not the accused. "What do you want of me?" demanded Labori heatedly.

"Yes, and what do pou want of me?" retorted Mercier. It was an exciting moment and the audience jumped to its feet, expecting a ersonal encounter between Mercier and wabori. The prisoner arose once during Mercier's testimony to emphasize a point of the secret evidence which was produced against him at the former trial. He ex- lained that only the bordereau was shown him on that occasion. Again when General Risburg gave his ideas why Dreyfus was guilty, Dreyfus arose and cried: "Phrases are valueless, bring proofs." Major Cure, who was detailed by Pic- quart to investigate Esterhazy's charac- er, testified Esterhazy was always hav ng things copied.

Further testimony unfavorable to Esterhazy was given. A ew unimportant witnesses were exam- ned and the court adjourned. The ceedings today were generally marked by general paucity of new evidence. Rennes, August 24--The police ap- rehensive of a fresh assault on Labori wcause of his aggressiveness at today's session of the court martial. The guard about his house was increased this afternoon.
