Just Before Bus Smashed Six Cars at Intersection Of Sheridan and Transit Pictures on Page 19 and Picture Page The Public Service Commis sion in Albany was told today by one of its inspectors that a chartered Greyhound bus was traveling too fast downgrade to be stopped for a red traffic signal at Sheridan Drive and Transit Rd The bus carrying 28 soldiers westward on Sneridan Drive went out of control about 8 o'clock Sun day evening smashed its way through a line traffic waiting for the light and injured 21 per sons most of them in six autos Everett Emerson son of Mrs Mary Emerson who was critically injured in the acci dent at Sheridan Drive and Transit Rd Sunday evening helped tow away wrecked cars at the accident scene But it was hours before he knew his mother was one of the victims Mr Emerson who helps out occasionally in a service sta tion at 4220 Sheridan Drive where he has an apartment had just come in for supper when he was asked to help in the towing operation A brother Howard phoned him about 10 to in form him his mother had been taken to Hospital His mother apparently had been removed to an ambulance by the time he reached the scene Mr Emerson said 'Angry With Girl Driver ined $100 After 80 mph Chase John Marketta a PSC official who inspected the bus after the accident telephoned a condensed report to the commission today He said inspection showed skid marks at the top of the hill indicating that the bus driver had applied the brakes but that the bus was mov ing at such speed on the down grade that he could not bring it to a stop PSC officials in Albany said they expect a more detailed report from Mr Marketta in writing Car Rolled Over Like Toy The bus driver Robert Ed wards 30 of North Syracuse told Town of Amherst police the brakes on the vehicle failed when he at tempted to stop for a traffic light at Transit Rd The bus screamed into the inter section carrying what must have seemed like certain death to horri fied motorists 'powerless to evade it It rolled a car over like a toy struck two others and finally stopped with three more cars a tangled mass of wreckage in front of it The injured were taken In am bulances to four hospitals which swiftly became focal points of I fearful tension as relatives sought information about persons known to have been injured or who might have been involved in the acci dent The victims and their injuries as head injuries Raymond Thorpe 35 of 257 Riley St cuts on neck and left arm Ruth his wife 35 an expectant mother right leg fracture probable skull fracture and chest injuries Max Schuppenhauer 39 of 491 Woodward Ave skull fracture cuts on scalp and left arm Gertrude his wife 34 head in juries fractures of left leg and sev eral ribs multiple cuts on right leg condition critical Mrs Marian Smith 20 of Phelp' neck injuries discharged this after noon KENMORE MERCY Mrs Emma Madden 57 of 491 Woodward Ave North Tonawanda fractures of both legs removed from critical list today Harry Hakes 23 of Dryden bruises on left arm License Also Suspended After Plea of Guilty To Reckless Driving Another Speeder Held Charles Jones 27 of 43 Cedar St was angry with his girl friend so he stepped on the gas The girl friend prayed so hard in her she told police officers who finally halted Jones after an 80 miles an hour chase early Sun day morning Jones pleaded guilty tn reckless driving today and was fined S100 in Traffic Court Judge Michael Zimmer also suspended his li cense for four months Patrolmen Carl Kibler and Leonard Jurewicz of the Louisi ana station reported Jones passed two red traffic lights on South Park Ave one on Elk St and three on Bailey Ave before he pulled into Hopkins St off his lights and tried to lose A 24 year old driver reported by police to be parolee from Elmira Reformatory pleaded guilty to charges of drunken driving driving without an license and reckless driving Edward Wapniewski of 130 Grote St was stopped at Niagara St and Potomac Ave early Satur day by Patrolmen George Lon car and John Crotty of the Acci dent Division They charged Wan niewski with speeding 55 miles an hour in Tonawanda and Niagara Sts weaving over the center line and passing a stop sign and a traf fic light during the pursuit Judge Zimmer ordered a proba tion investigation returnable Sept 1 the sentencing date Wapniew ski was ordered to jail without bail STORY THREATS PROBED IN DEATH IVE Analysis The Erie County Health Depart ment today opened an all out war on mosquitoes infesting swamps and stagnant ponds in South Buf falo Equipped with sampling instru ments four sanitation inspectors this afternoon visited a swamp on Hopkins St between Lockwood Ave and Altruria St where a heavy concentration of mosquito larvae was found Inspector William showed a Buffalo Evening News re porter a quart jar in which he said there were more than 50 larva specimens The samples will be permitted to mature in the Health laboratory and then will be classified are on the lookout for ano pheles mosquitoes the disease carrying Mr said far we have found Regardless of whether any dis case bearing mosquitoes are found the high concentrations of samples taken so far indicate that the Health Department will make spe cific recommendations to the Com mon Council for mosquito control Other samples taken at the old dump at the east end of the Tifft St viaduct and near the shelter house in Cazenovia Park also indi cate high concentrations Mr disclosed Samples will be taken at all pos sible breeding places in the area bounded by Tifft St the city line Hopkins St and Cazenovia Park in Operator of Machine Tells Probers By the Associated Press WASHINGTON Aug 17 A Government Printing Office em ploye today identified a fellow worker Edward Rothschild face to face as a one time member of the Communist Party James Phillips a bookbinding machine operator testified that Rothschild has no direct access to secret material in thd Government printing plant but easily could get such material from other workers Mr Phillips confronted the slightly built pipe smoking Roths child at a hearing by the Senate Investigations Subcommittee which is looking for evidence that secret material in the GPO has been leaked to the Communists Mr Phillips testified he first met Rothschild in 1938 He identi fied Rothschild as one of 25 or 30 attended a meeting in a private home to organize a Milwaukee Brave stand as a couple of young men who offer some proof that the era of baseball greatness is not yet over Roberts is on his way again to a 30 victory season Last season he missed becoming the first since Dizzy Dean to hit that impressive figure but left promise of things to come when he led all major league hurlers in victories with 28 against 7 defeats This season he has become the first hurler since the day of Dean and Hubbell to win 20 or more for four straight seasons and he has a chance to win those 30 His rec ord now is 20 9 Mathews with 37 home runs is just off the pace
