Power Corporation has decided not to wait for the redevelopment of the Niagara River 'to obtain more power but will proceed with a $30000000 expansion of the Huntley steam electric station in River Rd This will make the Huntley sta tion one of the largest electric power producing units in the world Niagara Mohawk directors meeting in Buffalo Thursday aft ernoon approved the installation of a new 200000 kilowatt generat ing unit This will make it possi ble for the plant to generate more than 1000000 kilowatts This output compares with the proposed new output of 1600000 kilowatts that would be obtained in the redevelopment of the Ni agara River Steam to Be Main Source The new Huntley unit sched uled for completion in 1957 will be the large steam electric generating unit that Niagara Mo hawk has installed sfrice World War II Since 1945 the company has spent more than $400000000 in construction of generating fa cilities including a new steam unit with dependable capacity of 100000 kilowatts at Dunkirk and two 100000 kilowatt units at the Huntley plant in Buffalo Niagara Mohawk Power execu tives said that the great pre ponderance of the power require ments of the utility system will continue to be met by steam gen eration It is expetced that by the end of the year the system will have a hydro capacity of 1100929 kil owatts and a steam capacity of 1675000 kilowatts or a total of 2775929 kilowatts No Extra Building Required President Earle Machold'of Niagara Mohawk who was unable to attend the meeting because of illness said in a state ment that the Niagara project could be started in 1955 power would not be available until Mr Machold said Niagara Mo hawk hopes that Congress soon will authorize private enterprise to redevelop power on the Ni agara will continue vigorous efforts to obtain this authority he said although reliable indica tions from Albany and Washing ton give little basis for hope that the status quo will be changed lhe new units at Huntley will I not require an addition to the buildings Old stoker fired equip ment will be removed from an area roughly in the middle of the present plant to provide room for the giant new generator TRAIC COURT Judge
