Chuao.o, July The fare of the Powell exploring expedition seeius to be involved in deeper mystery than ever. The Tribune Tliis morning publishes dispatch from Mr. Powell, wife of Major Powell, dated at Itetroit last evening, in answer to au inquiry from the editor of the Tribune as to whether John Sumner, to whose story the disaster is attributed by the Omaha Republican, belonged to her husband's expedition. Mrs. Powell says that John Sumner was a member of the expedition, but still she does not believe his story, and evidently does not believe that it comes from John Sumner.

There is clearly good reason for hi doubts as there would proba bly have been something heard directly from John Sumner ere this had the expedition lheu lost, and hi left as the sole silrvivor. As, however, nothing directly hasliecn heard from New York, of Powell, siuee his letter to the Ti Umne of May i'-lth, the question is narrowed down to this "Has John Sumner actually returned from the expedition and reported its loss on the Green river, late in Jr. tie, which story got hold of, appropiiated or boggled; or the story attributed to Sumner, only another of the lying inventions of Uisdon, and which lie left behind him in Iakutah?" This can only be settled by news of Sutnuer or the assurauce from Green ltiver City that he has not returned there. The three story building, Nos. 2.4.

41., fi and li'j Lake street, took tire this morning about one o'clm and was 0111-pletely destroyed. The building as occupied by saloons and small shops. The total loss is alsuit twenty thousand dollars, the heaviest falling upon Mr. Chester, saloon keeper. The building stood upou piles, and when partly consumed toppled our and buried some half a doen tiretueu in the ruins.

All were finally rescued without anyseiious injuries Last night the southward bound freight on the Illinois Central road ran off the track three miles'le-low Kankakee. It is supposed the accident occurred from the explosion of the boiler, as the engineer was found lying beneath the wreck burned to a cinder. There was scarcely a hum. 111 trace left of the unfortunate man. The fireman was also badly scalded, and it is rumored that a brakeman wa killed, but this is not authenticated.
