C. Albert L. Levy, liOl East street. Fresh Beef Travels on a Rapid Schedule Fresh beef for domestic markets goes from stockyards to retail stores within a period of about two weeks. Although chilled, this meat is not frozen; hence it cannot be stored for a rise in price.

A steer is dressed usually within twenty-four hours after purchase by the packer. The beef is held in a cooler at the packing house, at a temperature a little above freezing, for about three days. It is then loaded into a refrigerator car, where a1 similar temperature is maintained, and is in transit to market on an average of about six days. Upon arrival at the branch distributing house, it is unloaded into a and placed on sale. Swift Company requires all beef to be.sold during the week of arrival, and the average of sales is within five days.

Any delay along the above journey means deterioration in the meat and loss to the packer. Swift Company, U. S. A. Local Branches, Hams.

Mlifl City to Advertise For More Policemen Pay increase of JfXl over last year has not resulted in a rush being made for patrolmen's berths on the Pittsburgh force and Secretary Charles R. Bell ol X'art civil service commission yesterday was compelled to prepare advertisements. First-year men now are paid $112.50 per month and this sum will be advanced until the third year when the maximum wage of $125 per month is paid. The city is undergoing a shortage of labor in a number of departments. There are 17 vacancies in the bureau of engineering to be filled by engineers and transitmen.

An architectural draughtsman and assistant chemist are needed also. Among others for whom the city will advertise are auto truck drivers, auto machinists and miscellaneous labor. About 50 men will be added to the police force if they can be obtained. The positions are open to those who have been residents of the city for six months. Blaine, Iomita. John Paul Harris, 2522 Hackberry street, Cincinnati, and Andrew Munson, 446 Maria jLvenue, St. Paul, Avenue and Wood Street Pittsburgh, Pa. Fourth Loan Drive Sept. 28 to Oct, 19 WASHINGTON, July 21.

The treasury virtually has decided to hold the fourth Liberty loan campaign in the three weeks' period between Saturday, September 28. and Saturday, October 19. An announcement is expected this week in order to permit Liberty loan workers, with the hope of avoiding the range for the campaign. The length of the drive will be reduced from the usual four weeks as recommended many Liberty loan workersfi with the fiope of avoiding the usual slump of interest in the midjle of the campaign. Reasons prompting officials to choose these dates Included the fact that farmers during October probably can make liberal subscriptions from harvest proceeds and that it was desirable to end the campaign a week or two before the November elections.

Thousands of candidates for office are expected to enroll as Liberty loan speakers, although discussion of political issues will not be tolerated. NEW OFFICE TO OPEN. The Cunard Line. Anchor Line and Anchor-Donaldson Line are opening an office in Baltimore. Md at 107 East Baltimore street.

Such offices are already in operation at Xew A'ork, Roston. Chicago, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, St. Louis. San Francisco, Seattle, A'an-couver and AVinnipeg.
