Michael's Roman Catholic Church. Pius street. Southside, was laid yesterday afternoon with elaborate ceremonies. As early as 1 o'clock interested groups formed to await the formation of the societies and school children and uniformed commanderies of various branches oi the Catholic church, and at 2:30, when the American military band led the parade up Pius street, more than 5,000 people had collected to view the ceremony. Following the band were Companies and of the Uniformed Rank of the Knights of St.

George. Next in line came the Young Men's conference of St. Michael's casino, followed by the sodality boys, men's conference of the same church. Branch No. 49 'of the Catholio Mutual Beneficial association and the Roman Catholic brotherhood of St.

Michael's Church. The Excelsior band, composed of members of the church, followed, leading the St. Aloysius Beneficial society, followed by 1.2U0 schoot children. The parade was formed at the church In Pius street and marched over the following route: Along Plus street to Southern avenue, down Southern avenue Ormsby street, along that street to Gregory street and up that thoroughfare to Pius street, thence to the place of celebration. After the parade a male chorus connected with St.

Michael's Church rendered "Ave Maria," assisted cy choirs from St. George's Roman Catholic Church of the Thirty-first ward and St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church of South Twenty-eighth street. The "Star Spangled Banner" was beautifully sung by the united voices of all the schoot children, and after "Venl Creator" was rendered by choirs from St. Michael's.

St, George's and St. Peter's Churches, an address was delivered by Rev. Father P. Wnillms. central director of the Holy Childhood's society.

He spoke of the great benefits of the Catholic schools and raised Rev. Father Sabastin, of St. iiohael's for his energetic work in establishing this school. He commented upon the success of va rious Catholic organizations and talked some time, especially emphasising thai the Catholic instruction was far superiot to any other. He said that the growtn of St.

Michael's Roman Catholic Church in the S2 years of its existence was amazing, and in only 28 years of the parochial schools nearly- luO pupils were enrolled. Rev. Father Michael, superior, assisted by the Rev. Father Herman Joseph, of the St. Augustin monastery, Lawrenceville; Rev.

Father Godhard, or St. Augustin monastery; Rev. Father Walter, of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, of Liberty street, Allegheny; Rev. Father Hehir, president of Pittsburg college; Rev.

Father Stadelmann. professor at Pittsburg college; Rev. Father Schramm, of St. George's Church. Allen-town; Rev.

Father MeTighe. of Su John Church, Southside: Rev. Father Deviiu, Holy Cross Church, Brownstown: Rev. Father Gallagher, of St. Canice Church, Knoxville.

and Rev. Father Bernard, who was rector of St. Michael's for 15 years, laid the corner-stone. Architect C. Eckert was present to see the work executed, and Chief Marshal Andrew Stock, with able lieutenants in Peter Tochum and John Wilesbacker, carefully directed the movements of the people.

"The Day of Our Lord" was then rendered bv a male chorus, followed by "Te Deum" by the assemblage. The new parochial school will when finished be one of the finest In iiie country and will be built of the best material used in such structures. The first floor wilt contain a large hall with a seating capacity of L3; the second floor a larg recreation hall and six schoolrooms, and the third and fourth floors will be divided Into schoolrooms. That Melancthon street, from Blair street to Second avenue, be opened to a with of fifty 50) feet, in accordance with plan known as the Hazelwood Plan, approved by Councils.

23. A mob formed here to-day and the Dowlelte aiders. Ephraim Basslnger, of Bluff ton, and Silas Moot, of Lima. were its victims. The two elders came in on an Erie train, unknown to the authorities, oncer Instructions from Overseer Piper, ot Chicago.

They were recognized by. a small crowd at the depot, which refused to let them enter a cab, then followed them up the street, and surrounded them near -center of the city. The, local authorities had not been ad-vised'of the ime of their coming and the night police force had gone off duty, and i the day men had not reported. During i the trouble Elder Moot was given a severe blow on the eye. which closed it and discolored the flesh around it.

The elders were taken by the mob to the Richland Buggy works, where Basslnger disrobed, but the crowd tore Moot clothing from his body as he refused to disrobe himself. A paint bucket and a brush were then secured, and smokestack varnish, tar-like substance, was daubed over them from' head to fot. It was matted in their hair and no part of thetr bodies was left untouched, but their faces. Their bodies were then partially covered with their clothing, and the elders were marched to the home of K. H.

Leiby. a Zion follower here, who was driven out ot the city last Sunday. There tv promised not to return to MansHeld, but "later they' said they agreed not to return unless Overseer Piper ordered them to They were then marched to the city prison and locked up. By applications of lard and benzine, the i black varnish was cut and after new outfits of clothing were furnished they were deported on. a Pennsylvania train at noon.

Elder Moot was forcibly deported from this city August 12. and Elder Bassinger bad been deported by the authorities on the past four Sundays. FORTY MEN WERE CAPTURED. Raid of Gambling- and Disorderly ft eiwee; tae City 50p. Detectives Fitzgerald, Pavey.

Demmel. Roach. McElroy and McGovern raided an alleged club at 41 Chatham street at 1 o'clock yesterday morning and arrested 40 men whom they found gambling and drinking beer. At the hearing berore Magistrate McKenna the detectives stated that was va-. gambling and disorderly William Harrington, who ai named as the proprietor, was fined $lw.

They arrested the proprietor and seven visitors.

Officer William Waugh raided an at-leged disorderly house in East Robinson street. Allegheny, early yesterday and arrested -Emma Snyder, Peter Cornelius and Charles McFarland. Each was 6 and costs. -Lieutenant -Garrett Crossan. with a squad of police, raided the house of Joseph Tounouts, 1005- Bedford avenue, last night and arrested the proprietor and 11 visitors, all Italians.

A quantity of iiquot was found inthe place, and, together wita the prisoners, was sent to the Center avenue police station. Rebecca James, of 111S Penn avenue. wj arrested on a charge of a disorderly house late Saturday night, and was fined HO and costs by Magistrate Ken yesterday!
