Mr. Bnchen la a prominent pottery manufacturer. He registered at the Central Hotel on Monday, and has earefnlljr avoided notoriety in his re-aearehea of Pittsburgh industries.

The visitor returned last evening from a tour of the East Liverpool potteries. He will leave for his home this Mr. Bnchen confesses that scales of almon half a century's growth were removed from his optics by a few days' visit to the United States. "I am surprised," he said to a Post reporter, -at the magnitude of your Industries, and was lost in amazement at the new fuel which seems so bountifully provided by nature. Judging from present Indications, Pittsburgh is fcertainly destined to become the manufacturing city of the world.

In the glag Industry the good effect of gas for fuel are especial! noticeable. There Is no reason why the glass "products of the Lotted States should not eseel those of any other country. With skilled workmen and a fuel absolutely free from dirt, the very unest grades of glass must in the future be made in America. The improved finality of products is more a consideration than the cheapness of the fuel." Mr. Kuchen is a free trader of pronounced type.

He advanced the opinion that this country had crept long enough, and should now be able to stand alone. Hy her strong protective policy, he says. Knglih products have been kept out of the American market, but England at the same time has had a monopoly of trade with all other nations of the world. THK MINEBS' CONVENTION. The K.

of river miners met in coo-ventton at Monongahela l-fty yesterday. There were forty-nine delegates present representing forty-four pits. Blaster Workman Newman in calling the convention to order explained its object. Ue said the principal business would be to decide whether the operators' terms should be accepted or the strike continued for three cents. A rumor was in circulation that Joseph Walton would pay three cents after December 1.

A letter was read to the convention from Mr. Walton stating that this was not true. After the routine business was disposed of I'refident Newman called for the reports of delegates. Contrary to general custom most of thciu came instructed. They were pretty evenly divided on the price question.

The representative from O'Neill pits, which are among the largest on the river, reported his constituents were In favor of accepting Scents. This report was otfset by the action of the miners employed by Homer St Roberts and Joseph Walton. They still demand three cents. As the diflerent reports were submitted It became evident there han been a change of heart among some of the most enthusiastic strikers. The price question was finally referred to the Executive Committee, who decided to recall (xrand Master Workman Powderly at once.

Pending his arrival no definite action will tie taken. A number of strikers in the Second and Third pools have gone to work. BKIUHT UHHtS MEET. Vacle Jaass Cessna asid Others la Court Sate. Yesterday in the United States Circuit Court, arguments were made upon the application of John C.
