A View uf the Suhject net Heretofore Discussed iiggtt-tiuiis orthy of ou-stderatlou. KoiTOR.s ijAZiTiE Much has recently been said in our City Councils and through the press, concerning the pur- chase of property for the erection of new 1 water works, tuite a number of sites have been suggested, and I incline i i to the opinion that the place rteorn- mended by the Water Committee, which i passed Select Councils and is now under consideration in the Common branch, appears to have more advantages than named.

Stiii, there are some people who have failed to be convinced that there is really a nece.voty for new water works at that or any other point at this time, but believe that our present works, by the expenditure of a comparatively small sum of money, Toty be made to auswer abundantly all purposes for years 10 come. The Water Committee, and some other gentlemen iu Councils, apparently have water worKs on the ihe fact that there is now in existence an expensive institution of that character which might require some attention is almost entirely ignored. To re sure, 1 here have been complaints made concerning the quantity ami quality of the water; but when investigated by a Special Committee of Councils last Summer ths fault was found to be an insufficient supply in the baius and their filthy con- (they had not been cleaned for about a year, and vere not bail full of water,) the Committee reported the facta and recommended an ordinance providing for keeping the basins in better order, nut the report was referred to the Water Committee, and that was the end of it. Now I (submit, wouiii larger water works, in condition described, have remedied this matter So far as supply is concerned, there are some people who assert that if the present reservoirs are kept well filled with water there will be no scarcity of that article anywhere in the consolidated city. if there is riot enough motive power for I the purpose, by not procure another en- jine or two; ii can le done at decidpily jess che tiian tfie purchase of toe proposed Pito will eventually amount to, for that involve the expenditure of three or four milliona of dojlars.

The present position is certainly sulliciently elevated. A responsible of Councils, in prfrsenune a for on extension of wat'r fact lutes in the country districts, asserted that the pressure of the water was almost sufficient to burst the pinea; and surely such force would be enough to t-uppiy the entire city if the requisite quantity of watr was kept in the As to the quality of the water, going up the Allegheny river a few miles cannot possibly much better it. for there is oil ti sting on ihe surface ail the way to bi City. there has been no complaint on ihat score, while other matters were proper condition. These statements are respectfully SHb-milled to the consideration of Council-men, aud others interented.
