WEDNESDAY EVENING, MAY 16, 1962 NINE Phoenicia Walter Smith Telephone OV 8-6510 Community Events PHOENICIA Mi. and Walter Smith sailed May 11 from New York on the liner Bremen for a tour of Europe, highlights of the trip will include visits to Scotland, Austria and Italy. They expect to return home about Aug. 1.

Mrs. Smith is the Phoenicia correspondent of The Freeman. During her absence, John P. Dinneny will cover Phoenicia- Mt. Tremper news for the newspaper.

He maybe contacted at OV 8-2281 to report any newsworthy items. Funeral services for Mrs. James Simpson were held at the Methodist Church Saturday at 11 a. m. The Rev.

H. Chase Page, pastor, officiated. The services were largely attended. Burial was in the Hudler Cemetery, Mt. Tremper.

Mrs. Simpson died May 9 at the Benedictine Hospital. She is survived by her husband, James A. Simpson; a daughter, Mrs. John Mahar of Dcfrcest- ville; two sisters, Mi's.

Edward Siaudt of Kingston and Mrs. Hazel Gale of Chichester. Also surviving are two grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. The Board of Trustees of the Phoenicia Lihrary Association meets Wednesday, 8 p. m.

at the library. An important matter relating to finances tops the agenda. The American Legion Auxiliary will conduct a food sale May 19 from 10 a. m. to 12 noon on the porch of Wilkins Electric store.

A wide variety of homemade specialties will be offered. The annual Poppy Sale opened May 10 and will continue until Memorial Day. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hereth have been appointed counselors of the newly formed Intermediate Methodist Youth Fellowship at the Phoenicia church.

The Tiskilwa Rebckah held a successful card party May 11 at the IOOF Hall, Church Street. Various card and other games were played after which refreshments were served. A mission Is being conducted this week in the St. Francis de Sales Parish by the Rev. John McNulty of the Seminary, Cheshire, Conn.

At Phoenicia it will be held Sunday through Wednesday, May 13-16, and at Boiceville Thursday through Sunday, May 17-20. It will come to a solemn close at the 9 Sunday Mass in Boiceville. The Town of Shandaken Nursing Committee held a successful food sale May 12 on the porch of Electric store in Phoenicia. Everything was sold and receipts amounted to nearly $50. The proceeds will enable the committee to continue its annual scholarship grant of $50 to an Onteora graduate who enters the nursing profession.

Dr. John G. McKeon, local hysician, is a patient at the ienedictine Hospital, Kingston. Saturday evening, June 2 a full course chicken barbecue dinner will he served family style at Lodge in Big Indian. The entire proceeds will benefit St.

Francis de Sales Parish. Mr. Casimir, proprietor of the lodge, is donating the dinner. Servings will begin promptly at 6 p. m.

Tickets or further Information may be obtained from Mrs. Catherine Murphy. Contributions of blood will be sought on May 23 for the Town of Shandaken blood bank at the Town Hall, between the hours cf 7:30 and 9:30 p. m. Donors are urgently needed as the bank is dangerously low.

Those willing, but unable to give, may make cash donations. Those interested may contact committee members, Mrs. Catherine Murphy of Phoenicia or Jack Wallace in Pine Hill. Next Sunday, May 20, at 2 p. the crowning of the Blessed Virgin will take place in St.
