Their hearts were light, were these Mountaineers', for, for the first time in 20 years, a West Virginia University football team achieved a victory over a University of Pittsburgh eleven. Some 15,000 fans saw the team of Glenn Warner go down to a righting defeat by a score of 9 to 6- Staged at Forbes Field with a bright, sunshiny setting yesterday afternoon, the contest was stubborn from start to, finish, and at the same time the most thrilling in several seasons in the Oakland stadium.

At times the playing was brilliant; it never was Fraik E. Linesman 1). AV. Merrlman, Geneva. that promise an early score. They received the kickoff and punted and forced a break when West Virginia tried to return the kick on the final down.

Gwosden, put right end, broke through and blocked the punt and Murdoch, Pitt tackle, fell on the ball yards from the West Virginia goal. Anderson made two yards and Hewitt four in the line and then a forward pass by Anderson to Jordan, following a delayed pass from Hewitt, gained nine yards for first down the 11-iyard line. West-Virginia appeared to be dazzled bv the speed the Pitt attack. Pitt Loses Early Chance. Hewitt hit center and broke through for five yards, and then made three yards at left tackle placing the ball on the three-yard line.

On the third down. Marsh playing left halfback for Pitt, in plkce of Flanagan, was forced back by Capt. Meredith of West Virginia for a loss seven yards on an attenipt to run right end. and the ball was back on the 10-yard line for the final down, with the goal line to make. Johnson fumbled a delayed pass from Hewitt the fourth day and Mahan of West Virginia recovered the ball on the 15-yard, line.

Thus did West Virginia check the initial advance of the battle, and provide the first of a series of spectacular defensive plays which the two teams injected into the contest. West Virginia ounted away and Pitt returned the ball to its own 45-yard line and then cut loose with some forward passes that threatened trouble. The first went wild, but the second gained 16 yards and Irouffht first down on ine vyesTT Virginia 39-yard line. Two line plays and two more passes lanea ana west Virginia took away the ball on downs on its own 40-vard line. There was no further action In the quarter, which ended with Wrest Virginia in possession of the ball on its own 40-yard line.

The second play the new period saw Martin and Pitt ran tack to the 2S-yard line. Three plays netted eight yards and then came the second "break," Johnson's punt being partly blocked by Capt. Meredith of West Virginia and deflected into the arms of Halfback Homer Martin, who raced 28 vards for the Mountaineers' touchdown. Shortly after. the next kick-off, by West Virginia.

Shuler picked up a Pitt punt, claiming it had been touched bv a West Virlgnla player, and ran down the field unmolosted and touched the ball down behind the goal line. The claim was not lowed, however, and the ball was broutrht back and Pitt penalized 15 yards on the play, giving West Virginia the oval on its own 48-yard line for first down. A punt'ng duel took up the remaining part of the quarter until just before the finish, when Mahrt of West Virginia intercepted a forward pass by Pitt in the Panther territory and ran back the ball five vards I to the Pitt 33. Two plays netted two vards and, with the half almost up West Virginia tried for a field gOl from placement, by Ekberg. standing -on his 40-yard line, with Nardacci holding the ball.

The kick was short and was caught by Johnson on the eight-yard line and run back to the 23. The half ened after the next play, which gained a yard for Pitt, and West Virginia' trotted off the field on the long end of a 6-0 score. Fumble Ends Pitt Drive. Pitt was on the business end of a tough break in the third quarter, when it mde a great effort to go ahead or tie the score marching down the field, only to have a fumble lose the ball after a drive of 73 vards. In a way.

this procession was the outstanding feature of the wme, and it was a pitv that it ended the Panthers With Mountaineers returned Shuler's punt 13 yards to his own 27-yard line, Mahrt got loose around right end for a run of 21 yards and first down cn his own iS-yard line. Shuler was hurt in an attempt to stop him near the sideline and Pitt took time out. Ekberg made three yards throueh center. Mahrt made two more at left end. Nardacci made two yards at left end.

Williams replaced Gwosden at right end for Pitt. Martin punted to Johnson, who ran the ball back 11 yards to the 16-yard line, Johnson made four yards at riirht end on a double pass from Colonna. Another double pass, Colonna to Anderson, netted a yard at left end. Another double pass, Johnson to Jordan, failed to gain. West Virginia was penalized five yards for offs'de cm the play, giving Pitt first down on its own 25-yard line.

Anderson fumbled a double pass from Colonna and Pitt recovered for a gain of four yards. Seidelson. who was hurt on the play, was replaced by Gourley atleft guard. Bohren went in for Anderson at right halfback. Colonna made a yard at right guard.

Colonna made six yards through center for first down on the 86-yard line. Johnson made two yards and then one, yard at the end. ana West Virginia was offside, giving Pitt another first down on its 44-yarS line. Cornell's team, displaying mioSseason form, defeated New Hampshire State today, 68 to 7. Cornell started, off with a rush, pushing over two touchdowns in the first period and three in the second. The Ithacai added five more touchdowns in tire second half. Joe Kooney, substituting for Pfann, Cornell's regular quarterback, starred together with Capt- Eddie Kaw, Ramsey and Hart in brilliant back-field dashes. New Hampshire State showed Its only real flash of form in the fourth period when it scored a touchdown by the aerial route.

CHESTER. Oct. 14. (A. Albright College defeated P.

M. C. today by the score of 13 to 6. It was a hard-fought game throughout, both sides fighting from the start to the tlnieh for evtery inch of ground. By Associated Press PROVIDENCE, Oct.

14. Brown and Syracuse fought a terrific gridiron battle here this afternoon, neither team scoring. But if either (team deserved to win it was Syracuse, with such men as Bowman, fullback, and Anderson and McBride, halfbacks, exhibiting some of the finest offensive play ever seen on the Brown field. While the warriors time and again tor.e through the enemy line for great gains, they were not quite equal to the task of consistently battering down the powerful Brown forwards. Brown's attack was puny all the way through, but the, team was saved from defeat by its superb defense play.

In the last minute of play, Sweet, Brown halfback, thrilled the crowd with an almost successful attempt for a field long forward pass by Martin. Mahrt, standing on the 3S-yard line, drop-kicked a field goal, giving West Virginia the lead. Score West Virginia 9. Pitt Pierre Hill went in for Tallman at right end for West Virginia. Martin kicked off to Winterburn, who ran back 23 yards to the 29-yard line.

Hewitt made a yard at left guard. Sauers went in for Williams at right end for Pitt. A forward pass. Bohren to Jordan, was battered by one West Virginia player in'o the arms of another on the Pitt line as the game ended. Final score West Virginia 9, Pitt 6.

I Wisconsin Commission Bans TendierShade Bout MILWAUKEE, Oct. 14. (A. The Wisconsin State Boxing Commission announced late today that the Lew Tendler-Dave Shade bout scheduled here for next Thursr day has been called off. Dave Shade has failed to put up one-fourth of his guarantee which is J7.500 and Tendler did not place $1,000 for weight and appearance.

Both oversights are infringements of the state boxing laws. the action was of the ding-dong order all the way. Came Decided at Finish. Tletory might have perched on the banner of either team, for it was not until just before the end of the final quarter that the Mountaineers scored their winning points with a beauti- nf 1 1 AI .1 i uji-aiuAou 1 1 1: i Li guai srom trie toe of Mahrt, the new backfield tar. who was standing on his 33-jrard line.

Each team scored a touchdown. West Virginia in the -second quarter and Pitt in the fourth. All. through there were other big moments, when Fate first smiled and then frowned on one and then another of the elevens. West Virginia's touchdown was the result of a partly blocked punt Immediately after the start of the second quarter.

"With the ball on his own 36-yard line. Johnson, Pitt, halfback, punted and Mahan, a West Virginia lineman, partly blocked the kick, the ball being deflected into the arms of Martin, halfback, who raced 28 yards for the touchdown. Only one Pitt player bad a chance to get him and that was at the start of the run. This would-be tackier was shoved off with a straight-arm. Just as quickly after the start of the fourth quarter, Pitt shoved over its touchdown, following a 51-yard return of a West Virginia punt by Shuler, quarterback, who made the catch on his own 45-yard line and raced down the side of the field until be was tackled out of bounds on the four-yard line.

Fullback Nick Colon na failed to gain on the next play, but on the second down he knifed his way through left tackle for the touchdown. Both Mi Try-for-Point. Both teams missed their try for point and had it hot been for the field goal at the finish, he contest would have resulted in a 6-6 deadlock. Setron's try for West Virginia was through the medium of a placement kick from the 15-yard Una, with Nardacci, h61ding the ball. Anderson, Pitt, right halfback, broke through and blocked the kick.

Pitt's try was made by Pie Williams, who substituted at right end. He kicked from placement from the 10-yard link, only-five yards' behind the line of scrimmage. The boot went low; West Virginia appeared to be the better team on the field. At least it bad Pitt backed up in precarious position a good deal of the time and worked with more confidence than the Panthers, but the statistics of the game tell a different story. According to the figures, Pitt's net gain from scrimmage was 148 yards, while West "Virginia gained only 126 yards.

Pitt's gross gain was 182 yards, but 34 yards were lost on plays. West Virginia's gross gain was 150 yards, but the Mountaineers lost 24 yards. Pitt also had an edge of 2 to 1 in the matter of earned first downs, makirig eight as against four. The Panthers had one 15-yard penalty Inflicted on them, while the visitors were penalized a total of 25 yards, one 15-yard setback aad two of five yards each. "Game of Break:" West Virginia did not make an earned first down in the first half, in which it scored its touchdown, while Pitt made three, all of them in the first quarter.

The Panthers made five more in the third quarter, when they nasnea tneir one Dig sustamea attacic of the game, while West Virginia made -first down in the third quarter and three in the fourth, in which period, singularly, Pitt did its only scoring. Break followed break In such kaleidoscopic fashion that "the spectators had few chances to keep their eats. -Pitt played far better game than against Lafayette a week ago. Its offense was more polished, although conferences again were held behind the line of scrimmage (before almost very play, and its defense was tisrht. West Virginia- contribute its share by playing the beat game any Mountaineer eleven ever has put up at Forbes Field.

Heed Coaoh Dr. Clarence Spears has whipped together a mighty fine team. He has a strong, veteran forward line that plays hard, his ends are good and his backs really have a punch. It was anything bat a disgrace for Pitt to lose to this combination. Shuler, his second try he went over for the way it did. in view of the closeness of the tussle. The march began shortly before the middle of the period, when Johnson ran back, a Wests Virginia punt from his five-yard line to the 16. Three plays gained four yards and then a West Virginia offside made first down on the 25-yard line. Three more plays, two of them smashes by Colonna, made another first down on- the 36.

Two short end runs by Johrtson and another West Virginia offside made first down on the 44. Gains of three and six yards by Colonna through the tackles were followed by a two-yard push through center by Johnson and brought another first down, on the West Vir ginla 45-yard line. A double pass lost inree yaras ana then a triple pass, with a forward pass winding it up. gained eight yarda Another pass, JSohren to Shuler, gained 12 yards and first down on the 28. and West Virginia was beginning to fight desperately.

Colonna found a big hole through right tackle for five yards, and West Virginia took' time out to get together. On the next play Colonna went through left guard for 12 more yards and a first down on the 11-yard line Then came the heart-breaker. Colonna tried to carry the bail again, but fumbled, and TaUmann, Mountaineer end, fell on the pigskin on his 14-yard line, checking Pitt's sec-o3 Did for a touchdown. Mahrt made a yard at right end on the i next play aid the quarter was up. i Long Run Leads to Score.

West Virginia quickly gave back the scoring opportunity to Fitt, however, for three plays after the opening of the final quarter Martin puntei and Shuler, f'itt quarterback, broke away for a 51-yard return of the kick, starting from his own 45-yard line and being stopped only when tackled out of bounds on the four- after this Dlav. Colonna was stopped without a gain topped without a gain on the first try, but, on the second, he knifed his way through left tackle and was safely over the final chalk mark before being stopped. A piece of strategy that went wrong had Pitt in hot water during the remainder of the game. -Had the play worked out right, instead of with reverse English, it would have been a good one; as it was. It ied directly to West Virginia's victory, and almost by the margin of another touchdown instead of a field goal.

On the kickofr, following its touchdown, Titt tried to catch West Virginia napping with a trick play, a short kick alon the ground. As everybody is onside on the kickoff. the idea "was to have a Pitt man re-recover tTie ball and possibly get away on a long run. Instead of this, however, Setron, Mountaineer guard, was wide awake and on the job. He tell on the ball where it stopped, on ms 4S-vard line.

The chances are a regulation-distance kickoft would not have been carried back that far. West Virginia made a first down on the fltt 44-yard line in three plays and nine yarda in two more plays. However, the next try lost Ihree yards and Martin then punted, almost over the goal line. -Marsh Johnston took the ball on the one-yard line, but. was stopped on the six.

Colonna 1 gained two yards and then Johnson kicked away from behind the Pitt goal, out West Virginia made the catch in midneld and returned to the Pitt 43-yard line, again oeing in a threatening position. Pitt Fights Off Touchdown. Kkberg made three yarda at center and then a forward pass, was grounn ed. Another pass gained 19 yards for firt down on the 21-yard line. An end run and a tackle play netted 11 yards and first down on the 10, and the West Virginia supporters were yelling for another touchdown.

Mahrt ran off tackle for seven vards and the Mountaineers had three plays left to make the remain ing three yards to the goal line. At this point Coach Warner injected two tresh players into the. Pitt lineup. Flanagan relieving Johnson at left halfback and Ashbaugh taking Bowser's place at center. Kkberg hit center for two yards and it was third down and the.

goal line a vard away. Ekberg failed at left tackle on the next play, and, on the final try, Mahrt was thrown fo a loss ot two yards on an attempt to skirt Pitt's right end for the touchdown, the Panthers taking away the ball on downs on the three-yard line. Flanagan immediately punted from behincf the goal line, but West Virginia returned the ball from the Pitt 40 to the 30-yard line and again was in a threatening position. Hewitt replaced Colonna at fullback for Pitt. Martin made two yards at left end and then Flanagan broke down two successive long forward passes.

Just when Pitt rooters were beginning to breathe easier. Mahrt dropped back to the 38-yard line on the final down ar.d kicked as pretty a drop-kick field goal over the cross-bar as the most exacting critic could ask, puttinsr West Virginia In the lead. 9 to 6. with only a few minutes left to play. Shuler was at quarterback. The only change in the West Virginia lineup was mat aianrt was ai nsm halfback and Martin at fullback, these two players alternating positions.

Bowser, as acting captain won the toes for Pitt and elected to receive the kickoff defending the home plate goal. First Quarter. Mahan kicked off for West Virginia at 3:04 clock, Anderson receiving the ball on the 13-yard line and ran back 25 yards. Johnson lost a yard at right end. Anderson tumoiea ana Gwosden recovered for Pitt for a three-yard loss.

Johnson made five vards at right end. jonnson puntea to Nardacci on the 25-yard line and returned five yards before being forced out of bounds. Ekberg lost two yards at right end. Martin found a hole in the line for seven yards. Ekberg made four yards through left, tackle.

Martin's punt was blocked by Gwosden and Murdoch recovered on the 24-yard line. Anderson made two yards in the line and Hewitt added four through center. A double pass forward pass. Hewitt to Anderson to Jordan, gained nine yafds around left end for first down on the 11-yard line. Hewitt plunged through center for five yards.

He made three more at left tackle. Meredith smeared Johnson for a seven-yard loss at right end. It was last down and nine yards to go, with the ball on the 10-yard line. Johnson fumbled a from Hewitt and Mahan recovered for West ir-ginia on his own 15-yard line. Nardicci made four yards at left tackle and Martin adl five yards at the same spot.

Ekberg failed to gain throueli center. It was last down and one yard to Martin punted to Shuler. who returned 10 yards to the Pitt 45-yard line. A forward pass by Anderson went over Jordan's head. Jordan caught the next forward pass from Johnson while on his knees.

The pass gained 16 yards for first down on the West Virginia line. Hewitt made a yard at center. Hewitt fumbled and Anderson- recovered for a two-yard loss. On a fake end run, Anderson forward-passed to Gwosden. but the ball went wild.

Johnson's long forward pass to the side was juggled by Jordan and then dropped when Mahrt bumped into the receiver. It was West Virginia's ball on downs on its own 40-yard line. Ekberg lost two yards at left end. Nardicci lost five yards at right end, Johnson making the tackle. Shuler returned Martin's punt 10 yards to the Pitt 32-yard line.

Hewitt gained nine yards at right end on a double pass from Jonnson. Hewitt made two yards through center for first down on the Pitt 42-yard line. Mahrt broke down a double pass forward pass, Hewitt to Anderson to Jordan. A double pass. Hewitt to Jchn3on, lost a yard at right end.

A forward pass, Hewitt to Jordan, failed and would have been inter- cepted but for a collision between Martin and Nardacci. Johnson punted to the West Virginia 39-yard line, where the ball rolled dead near the sideline. Ekberg went out of bounds for no took the ball on the Pitt 45-yard line as the game ended. Bowser Kept at Center. A summary of the scoring chances of the two teams shows that West Virginia easily held the whip hand during most of the game, but that, nevertheless, it was anybody's fight right down to the finish.

Coach Warner of Pitt began the game with a changed lineup from that previously announced as likely to start. He made a last-minute switch and kept Bowser at center instead of moving him to quarterback to fill the shoes of Capt. Tommy Hnl-leran, who is out with a broken arm. Instead. Shuler started and played most of the game at quarter.

Tiny Miller, who was at center in the opening game of the season. Hid not break into the lineup. A side feature of the game was the attendance in a body of the Cornell alumni, who are holding their national convention here. The nbacans ocrupir-d a section in the left wing of the grandstand, with a banner displayed before it They rooted for Pitt and between the halves sang their famous "Amici" such fervor as to draw unstinted applaus from the spectators. The Pitt and West Virginia bands helped enliven the occasion and the Pitt cheering section put on a novelty in which the color schemes of the three universities were made to spell Va." and the students using blue and gold and red and white iumdkurchie-U to get the eSect.

Mahrt ran right end for five yards. Martin punted to Anderson, who returned 13 yards to the Pitt 28. Hewitt made six yards at right tackle, one at left tackle and an- other at right tackle. With two vards to go on the final down, Johnson went back to punt. His kick was partly blocked by Meredith, the West Virginia captain, and was recovered on the fly by Martin who ran from the 28-yard line for a touchdown, straight-arming the only Pitt man who was near him.

Setron's try-for-point from placement was blocked by Anderson. Score West Virginia 6, Pitt 0. Martin kicked off to Shuler. who returned 19 yards to the 24-yard line. Hewitt made two yards through center.

Anderson made four yards at left tackle. A double pass. Johnson to Jordan, on an end-round play, gained three yards at right end. and it was last down, one. yard to go.

Johnson punted and Shuler recovered the ball on the bound near the sideline and ran over. the goal line and touched the ball down under the uoal post, claiming a touchdown. He was called back, however, and Pitt was penalized 15 yards on the play. 2-ivina: West Virginia the ball for first down on its own 48-yard line. Mahrt lost two yards at right end and then was forced out of bounds for another loss of two yards at the same spot.

Xardacci made five yards at left end and Martin punted to Khuler. who ran back eight yarda to the 2fi'-yard line. Hewitt hit center for a yard before going out of bounds. Johnson dropped a forward pass from Anderson. Anderson loft a yard at left end.

Shuler punted to Narcacci, who fumbled and then recovered ball and with good interference made a fine return of 25 vards to midlield. Mahrt made seven yards at left end. West Virginia was penalized "15 yards for roughness on the play, putting the hall on its own 40-yard line, kkberg made three yards in" the line. He made seven yards at left tackle. Nar-daecl was stopped without gain at left end.

Martin's punt to Johnson was returned 11 yards to the 23-yard line. Anderson lost three yardst at left end.
