8A Del Rio News-Herald Saturday, December 19, 1998 SPORTS Katy out, MacArthur in state 5A finals Ineligible player forces Katy to be disqualified from championship game vs Midland Lee By MICHAEL A. LUTZ land nn fia MICHAEL A. LUTZ AP Writer About 24 hours before Katy was to play In the Class 5A Division II championship, the Tigers withdrew Friday after learning a player who participated in three plays in the playoffs had falsified grade reports and forged a teacher's signature. The ineligible player forced the defending 5A Division I champs out of the postseason. San Antonio MacArthur.

which lost to Katy in the semifinals, will be the replacement against Midland Lee (14-1) in Saturday's title game. MacArthur was 10-5 following the loss to Katy. "There are no options." UIL athletic director Charles Breithaupt said. "Katy self-reported and took themselves out of the playoffs. They did the thing that they had to do.

It's unfair to Mid- land Lee on one side, but MacArthur Js not prepared at all. It's going to be difficult to get their folks together and get there." Breithaupt said there was no discussion about delaying the game to give the teams a chance to prepare. The Lee-MacArthur game, which kicks off at 12:06 p.m., will be televised as part of a trlpleheader at Texas Stadium. Also scheduled at Texas Stadium are the 4A Division II championship between La Marque (130) and Stephenvilte (14-1) at 4 p.m., and the Class 2A Division II match between Celina (13-2) and Elysian Fields (12-3) at 8 p.m.. "Sometimes I think money drives things when they shouldn't," said Midland Lee coach John Parchman.

The 3A Division II championship game between Newton (13-1) and DaingerHeld (14-0) Is set for.3 p.m. in Nacbgdoches. Wheeler (12-2) and Tenaha (15-0) will meet for the 1A championship at 7:30 p.m. in Bedford. Breithaupt said the UIL has no lesser punishment for Katy's violation.

"We have debated In our meetings about what to do about a kid that makes an insignificant contribution," Breithaupt said. "But then you have to decide what is insignificant. If a player is Ineligible, this is the minimum penalty. We have to do what the schools have told us to do. "This is tragic for all concerned.

It's got to be heart- wrenching for those kids at Katy." Katy principal Robert Blankenship said the school learned late Thursday that a player falsified grades and forged a signature on a three-week grade report the week after violating the State's no-pass, no-play rules. School officials declined to Identify the player, saying only that he was a 17-year old senior, "As soon as we found out about it we notified the UIL, We did what we were supposed to do, said John Kerber, a spokesman for Katy coach Mike Johnston. Janet Horton, an attorney for the Katy Independent School District, agreed the school had no other options. "It's just very stringent rules," she said. "There's no wiggle room." Earlier this season, Katy forfeited a game after using an ineligible player.

In a separate incident, the UlL's state executive committee gave the school a public reprimand and placed the program on a one-year probation after learning that a parents' group violated amateur rules by purchasing meals and T-shirts for players. Katy superintendent Leonard Merrell said punishment for the latest incident had been discussed. Parchman. the Midland Lee coach, said he learned of the switch at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

He delayed the team's six- hour bus ride to allow more time to devise a game plan. He planned to Use the trip as a chalk-talk session since the team didn't get a chance to workout after learning of its new opponent. "It is bizarre," Parchman said. "Our first thought was 'Oh my gosh, we've got to go play somebody we don't But this is no time to panic. "We told the kids you've played some games where people come out in something different and you adapt in the course of the game.

This is no different." ALL TIMES EASTERN l-OOTKALL NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE AMERICAN CONFERENCE East Pet.
