IDA Del Rio News-Herald Friday, December 25, 1992 Teens say no to condoms DALLAS (AP) - A new study warns that only half of Dallas' sexually active high school students — among the most promiscuous in the nation — are taking steps to protect themselves against disease and pregnancy. "It's time for us to pull our heads out of the sand and say, 'Everybody is doing it,'" said Emily Alpert, who manages the young adult clinic at Parkland Memorial Hospital and runs health clinics in area high schools. "It crosses all barriers, economic, social and racial." The report, compiled by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, indicates that two in three Dallas high school students are sexually experienced. That's a 5 percentage point increase in two years. The survey was conducted in April and May of 1991 involving more than 12,000 students in the ninth through 12th grades across the nation. Nationwide, 54 percent of high school students said they had had sexual intercourse. The survey also showed 49 percent of the sexually active students in Dallas used condoms. The national average was 46 percent. The federal survey has alarmed health officials concerned about teen-agers' risk of catching AIDS. But the results didn't surprise local teen-agers. "The people I hang around with, it's 10 out of 10," said a 14-year-old girl who attends Cedar Hill High School. The findings "indicate that a substantial portion of students throughout the United States engage in behaviors that simultaneously place them at risk for HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancy," said the CDC report, published in the Dec. 18 edition of the agency's "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.! The report is intended to help school and health officials plan AIDS education programs. The Dallas Independent School District provides AIDS education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade with younger students learning the basics of hygiene and germs and older students discussing contraception and safer sex practices. "What frightens me is that they know to use condoms, they just don't use condoms," said Suzanne Wilson, education coordinator for the Dallas AIDS Resource Center. "It's not that they're stupid, they just don't understand the consequences." GREETINGS! Here's wishing the residents of Del Rio & Val Verde Coun A very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New year. THC APOTHCCAftV PHflfiMflCV CD UIICSC RPh 714 Bedell 775-8538 Sex video taken to top state court HOUSTON (AP) - A woman has asked the Texas Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling that overturned the $1 million award in damages she won after & former boyfriend showed ends a videotape he secretly recorded of the couple having sex. A brief filed by Susan Kerr's attorneys called the Supreme Court's Dec. 2 decision "an oversight of savage consequences" and that a retrial of the case would be unfair to the victim. "Seven years after injury, this court has ordered a new trial for Susan Kerr, now a married woman, who will be the centerfold of the national press in this sexual exploitation case," attorney Ronald Krist said in the brief. Ms. Kerr, who has moved from Houston to a West Texas ranch, is expecting her first child. The court ruled 6-3 that Texas law "cannot and should not attempt to provide redress for every instance of rude, insensitive or distasteful behavior, even though it may result in hurt feelings, embarrassment or even humiliation." In 1989, a Harris County jury found Dan Boyles Jr., and three of his friends, were guilty of negligence and gross negligence in secretly videotaping the encounter and showing it to others. The four were ordered to pay a collective $1 million. The three friends, who paid their portions of the verdict, set up the camera that taped Ms. Kerr, then 19, and Boyies, then 17, having sexual intercourse in a Houston bedroom in 1985. Boyles showed the tape on three occasions to friends at The University of Texas. Gossip about the incident spread, causing Ms. Kerr, who was attending another university, to seek psychological help because of humiliation and embarrassment, court records said. Boyles did not pay his (817,000 portion of the verdict pending the outcome of his appeal, which did not pertain to the other defendants. With interest, Boyles' share would have been about $1 million, attorneys said. Krist told The Houston Post on Wednesday that Ms. Kerr has made no decision on whether she will pursue a retrial if the rehearing before the high court is denied. "I'm beginning to believe that she went this far and might say she refuses to knuckle under." Krist said. for i$e stars!
