But that is not so any more, with solicitors, agents, peddlers, ringing my door doorbell from early morning—yes, even 'till late to the evening using "something free" or smart story methods to gain admission to my home. In fact says the Prudent „ Housewife and Miss Thrifty Shopper—"I am pestered with peddlers trying then* specialty sales arguments on me every day of the week until they have become a NUISANCE.'* WHO ARE BELL-RINGERS Cl Rule many are Floaters—here today and gone tomorrow. They are NOT responsible financially, morally or otherwise. They are NOT taxpayers or voters in any community. Where a local citizen is representing a house-to- house selling firm, he or she secures the majority of business thru the friendly sympathy racket and NOT on the merits of the product. This condition is OVERWORKED in every community—and Master Peddlers are always looking for this class of representative. Many Are Irresponsible. Men who cannot hold a position of anV responsibility for any length of time—and continually float from one job to another. The large number of classified ads reading "Agents Wanted—Canvassers—Peddlers—Solicitors—Representatives to sell from house-to-house" confirms the uncertainty of the peddler. // a Strange Man Came to Your Door-with nothing to seii-ask- ing for permission to come into your home— WOULD YOU LET HIM 7A ? Can You Afford to Take a Chance? w To House\vives Co. THIS IS A WARNING: To beware of thieves posing as solicitors or inspectors. Strangers seeking admittance to premises as salesmen, solicitors or inspectors SHOULD NOT BE ADMITTED UNTIL THEIR CREDENTIALS HAVE BEEN CHECKED and VERIFIED THROUGH DEPENDABLE LOCAL PERSONS. In many cases strangers, without verified credentials, are thieves or "spotters" for professional criminals and according to police records lack of caution by the householders in admitting such strangers often results in costly property losses and bitter experiences. It is natural to expect an influx of peddlers during the spring and summer months — as with the dandelion on the lawn the peddler appears on the porch offering through a cleverly prepared sales talk "something free"? to gain admittance to the home so as to show their wares. Often times HIGH PRESSURE METHODS are used in securing an order and in most every instance there is required a cash-in-advance payment. DO NOT PAY CASH IN ADVANCE TO STRANGERS—Know first who you are dealing with. Many times checks have been given to the peddler and later the party issuing the check has made attempts to cancel the order and stop payment on the check only to find that a third and innocent party has cashed the check. On the face of it "this is a poor way to do business." It's better to be SAFE than sorry BE SURE YOU KNOW WHO THE PEDDLER is before you permit him to enter your home. You do not need to hesitate to ASK FOR CREDENTIALS—Any representative from a local business firm calling on you will have credentials and they welcome such inquiry—that is why they are required to carry identification and credential cards. IF you find that the peddler at your door does not have proper identification phone the sheriff's office (phone number 233) as this office is willing to cooperate with you at all times. I* E. HOVEY, Sheriff Kossuth County, Iowa, What Values Have These Peddlers To Offer? Do you always receive THE SAME QUALITY w In Cample shown? A large majority of these Peddlers are representing arms which go into the wholesale market and buy SECONDS-IMPERFECTS paying equally as much as your merchant does for perfect standards. When the merchandise you ordered from the peddler arrive*—and it DOES NOT PROVE SATISFACTORY-Can You Get Your Money Back? Try to locate the clever salesman who collected your deposit.
