HiMMM I xxvin fT INK leaned far out of his 1 - Lj convertible, until his face was almost inside Ricky's coupe :on Sharon's side. "Yo, Chub!" ! h« yelled. Chub slid over and leaned tout of his car until his face was i inches away from Ridry. "Did iyou call me, Link?" ! Ricky tried to ignore the two grinning faces tt his windows, talking to each other through his car. It was an old trick. Usually he'd been one of the guyr; to do lit. Now he knew what it was like fto be the victim. "Say," Link yelled, pushing his [bead in a little more. "I found a [girl who ain't doing nothing. She | must be alone. You find any- I thing?" "Nobody here but us chickens." Ricky turned his head slightly, his whisper covered by the loudspeaker in the car. "Lock your door and get ready to roll up [the window." When th« door* were locked, Ricky waited his chance, until Chub and Link had their heads stuck way in the car, trying to block the view while they yelled jat each other. "Now," Ricky' said. With his left hand he rolled his window as fast as he could. ,It wasn't a big window, and in [a moment he had Chub caught by I the neck. A yell from Link in- idicated Sharon had caught him. "Roll "down the window!" Link i yelled. -^ "Watch your language In front iof me," Sharon said indignantly. '"Or, I'll roll this window til the i way to the top!" : Ricky blew his horn. "Aw, Ricky, don't be a loua«," iChub pleaded. "I'm not You know who's been lousinf up the evening." He blew the horn again ,and again, until two u*hew with flashlights ran up to sw what wa« noinf on. Ricky and Sharon rolled down their windows, frtt- yriMNMrs* _^ "These boys were annoying us," Sharon told the ushers. "Outside, you two," one of the ushers said to Link and Chub. "You'll get your money back." They climbed into their cars, disgusted and angry, starting them up with a roar calculated to annoy as many people as it could reach. "Come on, Sherm!" Chub bellowed. Sherm's distraught face showed at his window. "I lost my key." "We can't wait!" Chub yelled. "We're being kicked out! Meet us outside." The two rods flanking Ricky the exit, churning gravel as they tried to spray it against the parked cars along the ramp. Sherm was on his knees in the darkness, trying to feel for his key. "Sherm r Ricky called. "I know where your key is. Watch the movie and 111 give it to you later." , "But the guys. . . ." "Never mind the guys," Ricky said. "From now on you're staying part of this date if I have to take you home in my trunk." Sherm got up and dusted off his knees. His good-natured face lit up with a wide smile. "I didn't think you cared." "I care," Ricky said grimly. "1 care about the DTA. Now watch the movie." Ricky scowled at the screen. "Ricky Sharon sounded worried. What do you think Link will do when you get home?" Link too." * * the ahow was over, Ricky gave Sherm his key He waited until the impatient driven had raced out before starting. Sherm followed. Ricky drove out of town and onto the highway toward home. He drove at 50. It was a safe speed—and he wasn't in any to fit JMtt*. item stuofc right behind him. They'd gom about 10 miles when Riclq growled and looked irritated. "What's wrong?" Sharoi asked. "Sherm. - He's right on mj bumper. What's wrong with thai guy?" A moment later Ricky ana Sharon were jarred as the cai behind them bumped them slightly. "The crazy fool!" Ricky exclaimed. "Nerfing .me!" Sharon looked back. "Ricky ... it isn't Sherm." "Huh?** "It's Link." "He must have been waiting for us and sneaked in," Ricky muttered. His speed increased slightly. "Don't try to race with him, Ricky." "I've got to keep ahead of him," Ricky swore as Link bumped him again. "Ricky, please. Can't you see he's trying to make you mad enough to race? Then he can laugh in your face. He's trying to wreck the DTA." "T KNOW," Ricky gritted aa Link bumped him again. "But what can I do? He won't pass. I have to keep ahead." "Stop. It's better than risking everything. Your chance to enter the auto show . . the DTA. . . * "He'll stop with us." "Let him. We can outwait him." "I have to get you home. Your folks ..." "They'll understand. The way Link acts, I think he wants u* to go fast so he can wreck us." "Okay I'll stop." Ricky signaled with his hand,, slowed, and .pulled off the road, coming to a stop. Link followed then Sherm and. finally Chub. "Now what?" Ricky asked Sharon. "We don't move'unti] he's gone on ahead." "He'll think I'm scared." "What do you care what he thicks? His opinion doesn't mean anything." •Tm not yellow," Ricky snorted. NOW OPEN IN OUR New Location So. Hiway 61—Blytheville _,,.,,, MATTRESS CO.
