THE DAILY FREEMAN, KINGSTON, N.Y., WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1975 Many NFL All-Star Shuffled to the Sidelines By UP! Their names read like a of National Football League players hut for the most part this year they'll just be spectators. National Football League clubs had to cut to 46 players Tuesday and many of the names involved were in the AllPro category. The injury-ravaged Miami Dolphins placed middle linebacker Nick Buoniconti and safety Dick Anderson on injured reserve, meaning they must sit out the season. Cornell Green, long one of the top safeties in the NFL, announced his retirement from the Dallas Cowboys and Jim O'Brien, a national hero when his field goal in the final seconds gave Baltimore a Super Bowl victory, was cut by the New York Giants. Coaches made like jugglers as they trimmed and traded to reduce their rosters.

have to go through it one more time, too, since the 43-man limit for the regular season goes into effect next week. Buoniconti was extremely unhappy about the move. He broke his wrist in several places last week and must wear a cast all season. He would have been unable to play for a month. think the owners have put themselves into a corner with this Buoniconti said.

no room for a guy who will be out for five or six weeks. Thev did it as an economy move but I think they used judgment. The rule makes it more difficult for the players, too, because see guys trying to play who might not be recovered from an injury it's not the end for me. I'm not going to retire I just don't feel like I should My caliber of football doesn't warrant retiring. 1 feel good mentally and I feel strong.

Green, who like Buoniconti is 36, said he felt he could no longer put up with the rigors of pro football. "1 thought about retiring last year," said Green, who will work with the scouting department. said I would come back this season and would stay if the young players did not come through Once training camp started and 1 started doing those drills I kept looking around to see which one of those youngsters was going to help me who went to Detroit before being obtained by fhe Giants, was in a kicking derby but lost out to George Hunt. He also was unable to make it as a wide receiver There were more big names in the news. Tight end Marv Fleming, the only man ever to plav for five winning Super Bowl teams, was dropped by Washington along with veteran fullback Charlie Evans.

Detroit placed former Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens on the injured list putting him out until mid October The Lions also cut veterans Bob Pickard, Carl Capria and John Saunders Quarterback Jim Plunkett of the New England Patriots underwent shoulder surgery and could be out anywhere from one to two months Bobby Bell, Kansas former All Pro linebacker, was placed on waivers on his own request when he lost his starting job to Ken Avery. The Chiefs also obtained offensive lineman Kandy Beisler from San Francisco for cornerback Nate Allen and cut veteran defensive tackle Tom Keating Denver traded veteran back Bob Anderson, Dick's brother, to Dallas, placed Charles Smith on injured reserve and cut three players, including former Notre Dame star Erie Penick Chicago dealt running back Carl Garrett, a former of the Year, to the New York Jets for Mike Adamie and other considerations. (UPI) Only 13 New York Giants remained from the squad Coach Bill Arnsparger inherited two years ago as the team reached the 46-man NFL player limit Tuesday by cutting five players. Included in the cuts were veteran kicker Jim and 32-year old defensive end Roy Hilton. A cause of some excitement throughout the day was the unexplained absence of safety Spider Lockhart. In what was described as a with the management, Lockhart left camp and returned to his home early in the morning, returning to have a conference with Arnsparger late in the afternoon nothing." (UPI) The New York Jets, who ranked next to last in the American Football Conference in rushing last season, made another move Tuesday to strengthen their running attack. The Jets, who earlier this season acquired Bob Gresham from Houston and Steve Davis from Pittsburgh, dealt Mike Adamie to the Chicago Bears Tuesday for Carl Garrett, the Rookie of the Year with the then Boston Patriots in 1969. He went to Chicago two years ago. The Jets also sent a draft choice and the rights to defensive tackle Ron Rydalch, a 1974 draft pick who is playing in the World F(X)tball League, to Chicago for Garrett. Garrett, 5-foot-10 and 205pounds, has gained 3,236 yards and scored 21 touchdowns as a pro.

He was out most of last season with an ankle injury. He started two pre-season games last month and gained 107 yards on 40 carries. got the potential to he a No. said Jets Coach Charley Winner, who may be looking to team Garrett in the starting backfield with John Riggins. a top quality running back with Adamie, 5-9 and 200 pounds and a five-year vet from Northwestern, was acquired two years ago from Kansas City.

He is considered an excellent special teams player and captained the Jets' unit last year. Garrett could be in the starting lineup Sunday when the Jets face his old club, the Patriots, at New Haven, Conn. He and Davis are the only healthy backs. Riggins is out for a week with a pulled groin muscle, Emerson Boozer has a separated shoulder, Gresham has sore Achilles tendons and Jazz Jackson has a bruised kneecap. The Jets also cut their roster to the 46-plaver limit by cutting guards Tom Alvvard and Roger Bernhardt, safety James Daniels, receiver Leland Glass and defensive end Brison Manor.

Where Was Spider? But although the Yankees are out of contention, the rest of the season still represents a chance for many players to reach personal goals established before the season's start. Chris Chambliss and Doc Medich, experiencing contrasting seasons in this year of disappointment and frustration, both moved a step closer to their personal goals Tuesday night. Chambliss collected five hits, drove in three runs and scored twice to pace a 17-hit New York attack as the Yankees scored a 9-6 triumph over the Detroit Tigers. Medich improved his record to 13-16 despite allowing 11 hits and five runs in the six innings he worked. Chambliss, who figured to be a spot player in spring training, upped his average to .297 with his five hits.

After a succession of injuries to key Yankee personnel, Chambliss proved he could handle the job at First and has been one of the few Yankee bright spots this season. had four hit games before but 1 really member a five hit game, Chambliss said. "The only secret tonight was concentre tion. At this point in the sea son we re really getting ready for next year. I guess personal goals figure into that tixi.

I'd like to hit .300. My previous high was .292. Medich, who unlike Chambliss, was the subject of large expectations by both fans and management, has been a major disappointment this season. But Medich isn't ready to write off the year as a total loss, not as long as there still remain games left. just trying to salvage what's left of the season, said Medich.

nothing else is on the line, my pride is. The game for me is a very thing Even it it's just the two teams playing without fans in the stands, it's the same to me. Willie Horton hammered his 24th home run for the I igers Elsewhere in the American league, Cleveland, the hottest team in baseball, won its 10th game in 12 outings, 3-2 in 10 innings, over Boston; Baltimore routed Milwaukee, 9-1; Oakland nipjied Kansas City, 2-1 in 14 innings. California edged Chicago, 5-4; and Texas swept Minnesota, 3-0, and 4 2. Alan RBI single and Rick pitching lifted Cleveland to its win; Bobby Grich and Dave Duncan hit homers to back the mound work ot Doyle Alexander for the Orioles; Billy sin gle in the 14th Insisted Oakland; Wood lost his 19th for Chicago; and Dave hitting in the second game after a Jim I mbarger shutout in the first carried Texas.

Carlton: Hot and Cold There are still times when Steve Carlton ranks among the best pitchers in baseball. Unfortunately for the Philadelphia Phillies, those times were few and far between this year. Carlton, a former Cy Young Award winner whose career has been extremely erratic, pitched the Phils back into second place in the National League East Tuesday night when he beat the St. Ixiuis Cardinals 6-2 on a six-hitter. He also contributed a two-run double during a four-run sixth inning.

But while there are times like Tuesday night when the 30year-old left-hander resembles the pitcher who won 27 games for a last place club in 1972, there have been too many times this year when he has looked more like a batting practice pitcher. His victory Tuesday night was his first since Aug. 9 and he hud gone six starts without a victory. Obviously, Carlton is a major reason why the Phillies are still six games behind Pittsburgh in the division race. In other NL action, Chicago nipped Pittsburgh 6-5, Montreal edged New York 2-1, Atlanta topjied Houston 4-1, San Diego routed Cincinnati 11-2 and Angeles downed San Francisco 8-3.

Cubs 6, Pirates 5 Andv Thornton, who hom- ered earlier, singled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inping to lead Chicago over Pittsburgh. Joe Wallis had his first major league homer for the Cubs while Dave Parker hit his 22nd for Pittsburgh. The defeat cut the lead in the NL East to six games over Philadelphia. Expos 2, Mets I Mike Jorgensen doubled home Jim Dwver with nonp out in the 10th inning to give Montreal a victory over New York and a sweep of their three-game series. O'Brien, who achieved some fame by kicking the winning field goal for the Baltimore Colts in the 1971 Super Bowl, was beaten out by George Hunt for the departed Pete kicking job. Hilton became expendable when the Giants acquired defensive lineman Dave Gallagher from Chicago last week. Gallagher's ability to play two positions makes him more valuable with this smaller squad limit. Other players released were fourth year offensive lineman John Hill, rookie running back Bob Hammond and rookie defensive tackle Paul Linford. Linford, claimed on waivers from Green Bay, had taken place on the roster last week.
