Church's Chimes Silenced by Noise Control Law biIT kniT New Eyesore Rift hicago ap The Rev. Warren Mueller reluctantly has silenced the chimes of his church and the Chicago Noise Pollution Board which made him do it may find it has opened a box. For 22 years the carillon at St. United Church of Christ was sounded at quarter-hour intervals from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

and was heard over one-block residential area on Northwest Side. thought everybody loved said the Rev. Mr. (Mueller. the noise lution thing came up on a complaint of some residents.

The next thing knew, I was ticketed three weeks The Rev. Mr. Mueller said the only time the chimes have sounded since then was for a decibel reading by the company that installed them and a week ago Sunday for world-wide communion The Rev. Mr. Mueller found some sympathy ki court Tuesday.

He appeared to answer two complainants and he carried with him a petition signed by 3,400 residents who said they wanted the electrically operated carillon turned back on. More than 200 persons gathered to hear the proceedings in Circuit Court. Judge Vincent W. Tondryk took one look at the noisy crowd and requested a pretrial hearing in his chambers. He advised Lillian Laun and Virginia Anderson to withdraw their complaint.

They did. Tondryk said their complaint would not stand up in court on a nuisance charge alone and would have to come under the noise abatement ordinance which went into effect July 1. He requested that city inspectors take decibel readings next week to determine if the chimes are above the noise level. A representative of the manufacturer of the chimes said that when he took a decibel reading the volume was no louder than at other churches. The judge said if the sound was found to be in violation of the noise abatement ordinance, the city could file a new complaint against the church.

But, the judge added, if the matter is brought to court again it could become a precedent other complaints ever were filed against the loudness of church turn the carillon on again until the city inspectors determine the noise said the Rev. Mere Mews: Open Daily Saturday Sunday 12 Noon-5 PM. Just Soy GENESEE With three eyesores now removed from the Town of Genesee, another has popped up.

The town finally got rid of three houses on Wood Fern Drive in Genesee Depot. The houses were never occupied because a septic system permit was denied. They became eyesores and potential safety hazards, officials concluded. They were purchased by Harold Fickau, Mukwonago, moved there and the basement excavations filled. Now another eyesore on Old Village Road has become a problem.

Town Chmn. Clarence Bundy said the town has sent letters to the owner, talked to him about tearing down the house and even offered to let the Fire Department burn it as a drill. No luck. Sup. W.

G. Perren said the town was offered the house for $5,200. He claimed the place is worthless. Condemnation proceedings are possible, said Town Atty. Homer Williams, declaring the house a nuisance.

He will be given all the past correspondence between the town and the house owner to see what action can be taken. JOHNSON HIU'S STORF 741 N. Grand Av. Tabled for further investigation was the creation of two ordinances, one to control snowmobiles and the other to regulate the discharge of firearms in the town.

Bundy says the town last winter received complaints about snowmobiles but felt the board needed more information before action can be taken. Bundy also wanted the board to think about an nance banning the discharge of firearms in the town for any purpose. He said he received a complaint from a woman about shooting around her house. She said she was going to take matters in her own hands if something is not done, Bundy told the board. The town is becoming too populated to allow shooting, Bundy felt.

He said there are areas in the county where hunting and shooting are allowed. Currently under the county zoning laws, which apply to Genesee, firearms may be discharged only on land zoned as conservancy or agricultural. Bundy said he would like to see an ordinance which would control shooting on all town land. In other business the board agreed Hardy Waukesha, real estate firm, about a sign on Woods Road which advertises three one acre lots for sale. The area is zoned for three acre lots only.

The real estate firm will be asked to change the sign.
