Director Takes His Cast North Heard The Owl Call My the first of a new' series of 90 minute contemporary dramas, marks the return of the to television on Tuesday on the CBS Television Network from 9:30 to 11 p.m. Shot entirely on location on the rugged coast of British Columbia, Heard The Owl Call My stars Dean Jagger and Tom Courtenay and was adapted from Margaret novel by Gerald Di Pego. The holiday presentation also marks the return of Emmy winning producer-director Dar vl Duke to Vancouver, where he did the first TV show ever telecast there.

Daryl Duke brought his stars and technical crew up to Ahousat, an isolated village on Vancouver Island, for 26 days of shooting in an area that could only be reached by plane or water taxi. There, he engaged the local Noofka. Ahousat and Coast Indians for roles in the film; some of them turned out to be the sons and daughters of Indians he had worked with years ago in the same region. FOR TOM COURTENAY, the role of the young priest was a trying one.

Nothing in his back ground or previous perform ances he has starred in such films as Loneliness Of The Long Distance Day In The Life Of Ivan and prepared him for this role. Unlike Director Duke, Courtenay, a Britisher, had never seen a North American Indian before flying to the West Coast for this role, but his inexperience with primitive Canadian customs and folklore fit right into his portrayal of a priest who had to agonize with miliar and more primitive ways of life. During the filming of Courtenay learned many of the same things as the character he plays. summed up by Dean Jagger, that Hollywood institution, now in his 70s, who won an Oscar for in the role of the bishop: INDIAN knows his village and feels for his village as no white man for his country, his town, or even for his own bit of land. The village is not the strip of land four miles long and three miles wide that is his as long as the sun rises and the moon sets.

The myths are the village, and the black and white killer whales that herd the fish to the end of the inlet to devour them. The village is the salmon who comes up river to spawn, the seal who follows the salmon and bites off his head, the bluejay whose name is like the sound he makes. village is the talking bird, the owl, who calls the name of the man who is going to die.
