Victim Ignored Warning MILWAUKEE (AP) A friend's warning of my God, don't failed to stop Janice Bourdo from trying to hitch a ride home one day last week. But Miss Bourdo, 17, never arrived home. Instead, she was found a few hours later, fatally beaten and stabbed at a Highway 141 rest area near Port Washington. Police said she was picked up about 4 p.m. Friday while hitchhiking after leaving her job at a downtown restaurant.

Joseph J. Carroll 25, an unemployed Air Force veteran, was charged Monday with First degree murder in connection with the death. Another restaurant ploye, Marie Lynn Hohl, 16, described Tuesday a discussion she had with Miss Bourdo Friday afternoon. Miss Bourdo she wanted to be home early because her mother was fixing something special for dinner and she was going to a Miss Hohl said. told our boss, that she was ill so she could leave a little early.

said she had already missed the bus, so she would just hitch a Miss Hohl said the comment triggered memories of her driver education class at Wauwatosa East High School earlier that day. The class warned against hitchhiking. A reading assignment included a magazine article which some pretty gruesome stories about some people who had been murdered she said. She passed the warning on to Miss Bourdo. said something like, my God, she said.

But Miss Bourdo replied that she had hitchhiked many times and stories reading just Miss Hohl said.
