Sechlerville Never Caught On m. The Old J. H. Sechler Home In Sechlerville Tribune photos by Jean Anderson Sechlerville Today: Store, Left, Run By Loasching Family By JEAN ANDERSON Tribune Staff Writer HIXTON, Wis. became a wide spot in the road while the other prospered It was an old timer talking when he was asked about the rivalry and growth of Hixton and Sechlerville, about one half mile apart on Highway 95 in west central Jackson County While Hixton is an active community with 350 residents, Sechlerville looks like a residential development just outside Hixton Both communities were established in the 1850s Hixton by John Hicks who came to the area in 1854 and Sechlerville by Jacob R.

Sechler who came the following year. The Trempealeau River traversed both communities and afforded excellent water power for grist and flour mills The nearby prairie encouraged farming Both communities were soon platted and both thrived But Hixton, first called Williamsport and later Pole Grove, gradually overshadowed its neighbor to the west Their schools were consolidated and a new brick grade and Hixton High' School was built in between the two communities A post office operated at Sechlerville it had two rural routes for more than 90 years, finally closing in the 1950s Patrons are now served from the Hixton office. There are about 20 families in Sechlerville The Sechler General Store is now owned and operated by the Loasching family and Ed Embretson conducts an auto mechanic shop. Sechler's home, along Highway 95. is occupied by his great- granddaughter, Marion Skolos and her husband.

Sechlerville had a couple small stores, grist mill, cabinet shop, wagon shop and a couple of blacksmith shops But Sechlerville led in the religious element in the two communities A Presbyterian con- gregaton was organized there in 1862, and a Methodist church in 1868 The first church at Hixton is recorded as being a Congregational Church, built in 1875 Rev Joseph Wells, a scholarly man who founded the Presbyterian church, felt the area youth needed more educational opportunities than what the common district schools offered There were no high schools in the county until 1972. when Black River Falls High School was established, and the nearest small academy or college was Gale College at Galesville. Mr Wells then established the Sechlerville Seminary. a private or tuition school, in the large room over Jacob Sechler's general store It served as a preparatory school for Gale College The Rev Mr Wells drilled his eager students in Latin.
