Ernest Burnett, farmer residing eight miles north-1 west of Bonham, brought in the first bale of cotton Friday for the 1952 season and one of the earliest bales in recent years. Burnett had to pick over 15 acres! to get the 1,520 pounds of seed cotton that made the 516-pound bale. The Bonham Co-Op Gin handled the bale at no cost and Burnett received a $25 cash prize from the Bonham Chamber of Commerce. It marked the first year in a long time that a Bonham gin beat out a Honey Grove gin with the first Fannin bale.

Wainwright Predicts Record Popular Vote CHICAGO. Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright predicted today that voters will flock to the polls in this presidential election as they never have before. He said a record-breaking 60,000,000 voters were likely to participate to top the 1948 total of 48,680,000 votes cast by only 51 percent of the eligible voters.

Wainwright heads the Will organization, one of many national groups conducting out the drives. thousands of persons around the country are angry, disappointed, resentful and unhappy because the Democratic national convention refused to nominate Sen. Estes Kefauver for President. This is shown in the thousands of letters Senator Kefauver's office is receiving. Some express the hope he will try again.

Some blame his failure this time on the Some take his defeat as a personal affront; some say the failure to nominate Kefauver will make them vote Republican this year; and some indicate that because he isn on the ballot, they will not vote. More than a few are sending in a dollar on up, but not very high up. The Kefauver campaign needs this; in the red now. Southern Solons Have Favorite THEIRS NOT TO REASON WHY D. A.

Southern senators have discovered a new and are quoting his words with great relish. His Ewing Stevenson, vice president of the United States during Grover second administration. The interest for revived interest in the courtly, good-humored elder Stevenson is, of course, his grandson and namesake, the new Democratic presidential nominee. It the elder strong views on low tariffs and soft money favored his stand on an issue that still blazes today and which has Southern senators thumbing the musty old pages of bygone Congressional Records.

The issue is that of unlimited debate in the Senate, the weapon which Southern legislators traditionally use to filibuster federal civil rights legislation to death. Southern legislators feel that the elder Stevenson summed up the case for unlimited debate very eloquently in his final speech to the Senate on March 3. 1897. He said: must not be forgotten that the rules governing this body are founded deep in human experience; that they are the result of centuries of tireless effort in the legislative hall, to conserve, to render stable and secure, the rights and liberties which have been achieved by conflict. this chamber alone are preserved, without restraint, two essentials of wise legislation and good government right of amendment and of debate.

Great evils often result from hasty legislation; rarely from the delay which follows full discussion and deliberation. In my humble judgment, the historic Senate preserving the unrestricted right of amendment and of debate, maintaining intact the time-honored parliamentary methods and amenities which unfailingly secure action after in our scheme of government a value which can not be measured by The Southerners hope the grandson will heed his famed advice and abandon his reported willingness to fight for new Senate rules.
