S. Basketball Team Steals More Olympic Honors By LEO H. PETERSEN United Press Sports Editor LONDON, Aug. 13-- U.E --A much despised, much admired basketball team carried the conquering colors of the United States into the final full day of Oympic competition today, a "sure thing" to win the court title in a final battle against France. The Americans also were hoping for another gold medal in welterweight boxing where Sailor Horace (Hank; Herring of the San Diego, naval base.will fight Julius Torma of Czechoslovakia.

But it was the basketball team that was the center of attraction. The fans watching the tournament in Harringay Arena have booed almost every move made by the Americans in every game. Americans In Doghouse The American hoopsters have been "in the doghouse" since the first minute they walked onto the court and let the fans get a look at their height. "Monstrosity" was the cry raised when seven-foot Bob Kurland of the Phillips Oilers went out to play Center. The fans say it isn't fair for the Americans to be so big--it gives them an "unfair advantage." The proposal has been made to the Olympic rules committee that henceforth all players over six feet, three inches in height be barred from the game.

Nor is height the only thing the fans find wrong with the U. S. team. They say the Americans are too rough and too rude. Dazzle Show Brings Criticism The U.

S. Wins Yachting Medals Torma advanced to the final by outpointing Alessandro Ottavio of Italy. Other events of today's program are individual sabre finals in fencing, cycling, horsemanship, gymnastics, and the championship soccer match between Sweden and Yugoslavia. The United States won two gold medals yesterday, both in yachting. The U.

S. yacht Llanoria won the six-meter competition with 5,472 points to second-place Argentina's 5,320. although Argentina finished 19 seconds ahead in the final run. Since their first three games, the Yanks have committed very few fouls per game. Their 71 to 40 win over speedy Mexico in the semi-final was a masterpiece of court artistry. The performance brought hearty, but reluctant, applause from the gallery. In France, the Americans face a team that entered the games "just for experience" and has astounded everyone by reaching the final -round.

French Edge Out Brazil When the French got as far as Durkees COLOK-USt A A I Upset Recalled As Horses Wait For Sanford By OSCAR FRALEY United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, Aug. Twenty-nine years ago today an aptly-named chestunt colt called Upset wrote racing history at Saratoga when his thundering hoofs handed mighty Man O'War the only defeat of his story book career. Both of them are gone now, a part of the ghostly memories which sweetly haunt the spa, but as preparations are made for Monday's 36th running of the Sanford the old timers insist you see only one such pace in Big Red, even then in 1919 as a two-year-old with six straight Rally Beats Cardinals; Boston Edges Out Brooklyn By CARL LUNDQUIST United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, Aug. Lefty Warren Spahn, who might just as well have spent the last three weeks in Omsk, Siberia, as far as the Boston Braves were concerned, was back on the beam today and it was about time. Spahn, considered by many objective judges to be the top left handed pitcher in the National league, came through with a vital 2 to 1 victory last night over the Brooklyn Dodgers which put Boston four full games in front of the pursuing pack in the National league race.

He gave up only five hits and walked but one batter as he recorded his ninth victory against seven defeats. The Braves put over the winning run for him against Dodger Lefty Joe Hatten in the ninth inning when Tommy Holmes and Alvin Dark singled, pinch-hitter Jeff Heath was purposely passed and relief pitcher Ralph Branca let go with a wild pitch on his first toss to Bob Elliott, permitting the winning run to scors. Victory Has Psychological Aspects Spahn's victory had valuable psychological aspects aside from the fact that it.put Boston beyond the reach of Brooklyn in the remaining four games of the series. Because the lithe lefty from Buffalo, N. last year had been Boston's blue chips pitcher, the man who sent after games that "had" to be won.

This year, the rap against him was that he had all of his old stuff, his speed, his curves, and his brilliant control, but still couldn't win. His last victory had been achieved on July 21 and in the ensuing period he had been knocked out of the box three straight times. Last year at this time, however, he had won 14 games and was well on his way to a season total of 21. Pirates Defeat Cardinals The Pirates held back the third place Cardinals, also putting on a ninth inning rally to win a 3 to 2 decision at Pittsburgh which put them back in fourth place ahead of the idle Giants. Wally Westlake's two-run single delivered the tying and winning tallies.

Vic Lombardi gave up six hits to score his fifth victory. Loser Murry Dickson not only gave up fewer hits, five, but also contributed two hits and a run. His single in the ninth put St. Louis ahead, 2 to 1 after which the Pirates pulled the game out of the fire. The Indians turned the base-lines into assembly lines for run production at St.

Louis, massacring the Browns, 26 to 3 as they came within one tally of an American league record, yet they suffered the humiliation of going out of first place because they lost the opener of the double 8 to 4. The idle Athletics moved into first on percentage points. Bearden Batting Leader In the 29-hit second game spree pitcher Gene Bearden was the bat- leader as well as he breezed Ostrowski, a rookie lefty making his first start, upset the Indians in the opener as another rookie, Dick Kokos, set the batting pace with three doubles and Edward Pellagrini "got a two-run triple. Ex-Brownie Sam Zoldak suffered the defeat. Lou Boudreau and Allie Clark hit homers in a losing cause.

The Yankees and Red Sox rained out in the American and there were no other games scheduled in either league. Yesterday's star Lefty Gene Bearden, who drove in four runs with a homer and three singles, and pitched the Indians to a 26 to 3 victory over the Browns for an even break after St. Louis won the opener, 8 to 4. Out there in front, as expected, roared Golden Broom. The little horse named Upset was right at his withers. That front running pair held places to the top of the stretch as Man O'War worked his way through the pack and up int third place but then he couldn get through. They had him bo 1 tied and they kept him their right into the stretch. Upset Makes Move Then Upset suddenly made hi move.

Little Willie Knapp wen to the whip and the Whitne colt leaped past Golden Bropir and headed toward the nearin (wire. Loftus meanwhile finally hac jgqne outside of Golden Broom with Man O'War. And, given room, the golden thunder bolt was blazing down the stretch with a giant stride which slowly closed the gap. He was a wild horse, a grea tornado, defying and destroying time and distance. That was the first, last and only time Man O'War ever failed to bring the black and corn silk yellow of Glen Riddle farm home in front. Big Red Justifies Greatness Big Red won three more as a two-year-old that same year and then breezed through 11 straight races the next season to justify his right to greatness. It was in 1920, the next year, that he gained his long-awaited revenge, running Upset into the ground at Pimlico to take the 1'reakncss. But all that came later, after all the bad racing luck in the book had been tossed at his proud red head on Aug. 13, 1919, and he took it without quitting- Old Will Harbut, Big Red's trainer, used to say he was: "The mosles' horse that ever was."
