need The steel industry has on hand a supply that will run it for about two weeks Unless this is replenished and a steady flow of scrap con tinned they face at least a partial shutdown since the steel they turn out consists of fifty per cent scrap and the war effort will be seriously if not fatally handicapped The task of searching the homes and business places of this county to uncover and make available this scrap is not the work of a few community leaders but that of Tom Dick and Harry The campaign inaugurated in Nebraska by the Omaha World Iterald in which the news papers of the state cooperated and which brought in 87 3f 000 tons of scrap an average of 104 pounds for every c' man woman and child of the state gave Director Nelson the idea that the newspapers of the' nation might do what these of Nebraska had done' i To date Brazoscounty has produced more than 13000 tons of scrap but there are uncounted tons still about Much of that which has been shipped to the steel mills has gone to the junk yards in comparatively large lots and it has not included the combings of home after home and an intensive search of farms rindaluHliness establishments It has been the scrap right before the eye and comparative ly jeasy to lay a hand on and to move The success of the campaign thathas been launched will depend altogether upon the rank and file of the citi zenship It will call for the interest of the housewife of the husband and of all the children even those of 'less than school age All must be interested' since no piece of scrap is too small for the steel furnaces Two thousand bits of one pound each will make a ton of steel and this amount will go a long way in the war effort Plans are being made to enlist every resident of the county and all will be told the story of the need and of the challenge to Brazos county This need pan be met so faf 'as the power of Brazos county goes and the challenge accepted successfully if all will go to work The first task is to search out and gather the scrap Collection and transportation to the junk yard will be com paratively simple Gathering the material is the first step and the most important one A nd itis not a job in an all out war for very existence and they must make the choice between and as the Baruch report described the alternatives The latest indication that business and comfort as usual must be forgotten in a nation wide cooperation for the primary purpose of winning the'war is found in theannouncement by Claude Wickard secretary of agricul ture that the civilian meat supply for October November and December would be materially curtailed The supply to be for' civilian use will be of the four types of meat affected about 79 per cent of the supply consum cd in the last quarter of 1941 The types of meat are beef and veal lamb and pork and there will be greater curtail ment in pork than in any other type probably because so much' of this is sold in the cured state Generally speaking the per capita supply under this sort of volunteer rationing will be 2 4 pounds per weekMeatless days have been proposed for restaurants and other eating places But it is proposed that the family unit solve the1 problem as the members may see fit so long as they remain within the pound limit The supply of meat required to supply the armed forces of the nation and also to meet the requirements of tallies under the lend lease program is steadily increasing as the forces to be supplied are increased The civilian demand also has mounted largely because of the increas ed income of millions of persons affected by thehigh wages paid in war construction: and in industry geared to war Many workers enjoying a higher income than ever before are not only buying more meat but also are in the market for better grades of meat and for better cuts The rib roast Ai taking the place in thousands of cases of the pot roast which was a luxury in many a home in pre war days There any question but that as a result of this curtailment in? the civilian meat supply there will be a greater need for a more general use of what are usually termed the cheaper cuts than ever before They will be in more abundance as they always are because there are more of them in a beef veal lamb or hog than of the higher priced or more choice cuts But because the better cuts will be limited more use of the cheaper cuts will be necessary in order that the available supply of all cuts be better distributed 1 This is a curtailment to which the American people should adjust themselves without complaint or hesitation They can supplement their meat ration with poultry and eggs and milk and in limited measure even in an inland point such as their community with fish There will be no ss danger of insufficient nourishing food but there may be some dietetic changes necessary and these may be good for many of us si Most Americans were not prepared for tire and car rationing and many could not understand the need for rationing of sugar A curtailment in the meat supply may come as a surprise to many but this should be taken in stride because other curtailments and rationing programs are on
