to a burning home where he rescued a caretaker but was unable to save an elderly Phenix Cityman after Sanders had arrived home early from his third shifj job he ran barefooted to help Ella Bowden a 60 year old live in caretaker out of the blazing house at 2701 17th Ave He then got some shoes had some one summon firefighters and attempt ed jo carry AC Kimber the 82 year old homeowner to safety But a powerful explosion of oxygen tanks 7 threw Sanders and made it impossible to get his neighbor out alive happened so Sanders said shaking his head as family was dealing with their unexpected loss and Bowden was trying to recover from third degree burns at the Uni versity of Alabama Burn Center in Montgomery wanted to go back but the roof caved in I knew then: gone now I save him looking at a man just dying before my Sanders said disappointing part is I had him but I save The 3:15 am blaze apparently began when Kimber who was on oxygen and had been battling cancer for years was smoking in bed and ignited the mat tress Phenix City ire Department Deputy Chief Randy Doster said The tanks of oxygen exploded and spurred the fire on body was found half on the porch and half inside the house near the rear of his home He died of smoke asphyxiation and burns Russell County Coroner Jerry Key said Bowden had gone into the flaming bedroom and tried to save Kimber before Sanders arrived After she like them If there is such a thing as a hero I would place that label on Mrs Bowden and Mr The Alabama fire office is investigating which is routine in cases where someone dies body was sent to the
