EVENTS IN COUNCIL BLUS Enthusiastic Meeting of People Interested in Securing a Sugar actory Committee Appointed to Institute a Canvass Among the Panners to See AV hat Cun Be Pone Colonel Reed Grasps the Hand of Corbett James Craigmile's House Entered by Eastern Star Officers At the superior court room last even ing a large gathering of business men and patriotic and energetic citizens was held for the purpose of taking definite and decisive action with regard to tlie establishment of a beet sugar factory in Council Bluffs 'The figures on which the belief tha a factory will be a paying investment here is based were published by the World Herald yesterday After discussing the matter in all its bearings a committee of nine was appointed to institute a canvass among the farmers and gardeners to ascertain what can be relied on from them this year The committee is: AV Archer red Davis Leonard Everett William Moore Wilcox AV Thomas Graves AV Hart and Harry McGee This committee will meet Monday at otlice in this city and the meet ing of business men adjourned to Tues day evening when the report of the committee will le heard While no definite prediction can be made that a factory will be established here the outlook for such a movement is exceedingly bright SAW THE ELEPHANT Council iBIuffs Girl Describes Her to Monte Curio Miss Anna Bowman of Council Bluffs who is at present traveling in Europe writes some very interesting letters to Council Bluffs friends judging from the following extract from one in which she describes a visit she and her party made to Monte Carlo the famous European gambling resort: tit Monte Carlo we had dejeuner at Hotel des Londres and at once went through the gardens to the Casino grounds It is a wonderful spot overlooking the sea the terraces ex tendng down to it and a broad prome nade extending along its front Sol diers are stationed everyhere for the duke of this principality has a guard of 12000 men ready to protect his small domain against invasion There is everything in the way of flowers palms fountains and walks to beautify the place and the exterior of the build ings is also very striking AVe entered the place and presented our visiting cards (as is customary) to one of a committee of renchmen The man with whom I spoke took down my name and address in full asked me whom I came with (whereupon I presented our chaperone) and finally gave me a card of entrance "AVe went first to the reading rooms and library and then through the hall and corridors all gilded and arched and laid with a beautiful mosaic tloor Thence into the salon where the play ing was going on There are a number of rooms opening one into the other all decorated and draped perfectly I think that there were about ten tables and about each one a group of persons men and women of all ages and classes (deeply absorbed in the passion for gambling Throughout the place there was a quiet that was almost oppres sive only the subdued murmur of voices at times and the click of money as the croupier raked it in It was no place for small talk or commonplaces for every man and woman was play ing a desperate game although the faces for the most part were impassive "AVe watched at the table where only gold is handled and became fascinated with the playing of a young womanwith a sweet refined face who bad piles of gold stacked up and seemed to be winning repeatedly AVe alked away to an adjacent table and re turned ere long She was still play ing but her money had disappeared She turned to her escort behind her and said something to which he plainly remonstrated She persisted and he finally took a note out of his pocket and gave it to her It was changed into gold and gone in a thrice after which the couple quietly and hastily left the place This is only a tame little story of Monte Carlo that came under my own observation indeed besides the money borrowing ones we have heard about the losses and gains! and the sui cides in the quiet reading room and the gardens that look as if naught of un quiet or crime had ever ruffled their tranquillity That is the air of Monte Carlo perfect places but all of its serenities and beauties are like the faces of the players masks under the surface of which there is wretchedness and sin and death! the fascinating though oppres sive atmosphere of the salon we went to the theater and concert hall to listen to a few selections by the finest orches tra in the world every member being a composer and artist Heedless to say the music was delicious and the surroundings beautiful for everything about the place is calculated to fasci nate and enslave Once out in the air again I felt as though I had come from under a spell for I am far too human not to have felt the power and influ ence of the Bluffs Social Circles Mr and Mrs AV Jamison enter tained a large party of friends Wednes day evening at their home on irst ave nue One hundred and twenty invita tions were issued lJrogresslve high fivewas the chief amusement During the afternoon the company was composed entirely of ladies fifteen tables being filled Mrs John Tidd won the first prize a handsome plate and the
