Clint's cup overflowing If Clint Brawner's Phoenix garage wasn't full before, it's overflowing now. The tributes, testimonials and accolades poured in from every source that means anything in auto racing. And for a man who is not a driver but for a man who has done as much as anyone for auto racing to make it the No. 2 spectator sport in the country today. Auto racing's head mechanic was honored at a Hotel Westward Ho dinner last night.

And all he did was pay tribute to the people who made him what he is today. Although Brawner and Mario Andretti will be parting ways after this year, both realize what the other has meant to each other's career. "Andretti has proved everything I saw in him the first time I saw him race," Brawn' er said. "But I'm going to be racing hell out of him next year." Brawner and co-chief mechanic Jim McGee have switched over to Tucson's Roger McCluskey for next season! "I said at one time I wouldn't be a mechanic for an Arizona driver," Brawner -divulged. "But I think Roger has great qualities.

It will be a new challenge for me." Andretti has expressed a desire to be world champion I and that means racing full" time on the Grand Prix cuit. "As a driver, I have a lot to thank Clint for," Andretti said. "I'm very proud to have had him as chief mechanic." Both Brawner and Andretti received standing ovations. Bettenhausen, the son of Tony, must be considered the choice to do it again if anyone can. But among others driving in Manzanita Speedway's 50 lap main tonight in the top 20 of the championship division are Larry Dickson, and Mel Kenyon. Kenyon will attempt to become the first man to win the USAC Midget Championship four times, winning previously in 1964, 1967 and 1968. He was runner-up in 1963 and '66. Kenyon will drive an Offy tomorrow.

He finished third at Indy and in the Jimmy Bryan last year. The Lebanon, Ind. driver faces almost insurmountable odds tonight in trying to unseat midget, points leader Bob Tattersall. Tattersall, always a high finisher in the midget standings, has never won a championship before. He only needs fifth fastest qualifying time to wrap it up.

Other favorites in a field of 50 include locals Bob Huebner and Jerry McClung, two time championi Mike McGreevy, Sam Sessions, Dave Strickland, Merle Bettenhausen, Chuck Arnold and Arnie Knepper. Huebner and McClung proved they can beat some of the best sprint drivers in the country finishing one-three in the Western U.S. Championships. Both will be driving Offy powered cars. McClung has captured five main events with the caged sprints, three with the limited modifieds and two with the CRA sprints this year and hopes to be the first Arizona driver to win in four divisions.

Qualifying runs over Manzanita's half mile oval will start at 7:30 with the trophy dash set an hour later. Practice runs for tomorrow's Phoenix 200 are sched- uled for 9 a.m. with qualifying at 11:30. The $57,500 nationally televised race (Arizona blacked out) will be the next to last stop on the USAC Championship trail. The Riverside, Calif.

Rex Mays 300 closes the season Dec. 7. Three time USAC champion Mario Andretti heads a record field of 50 for this 20th running Phoenix race. The 26 fastest qualifiers will be shooting for a first place purse of $16,000 and point money. While Andretti has wrapped up the championship, six drivers are still in the running for second place.

A total of 400 points will be awarded to the winner. BAY MEADOWS RESULTS Clear and Fast el. 2YO, f. Richardine (Valenzuela) 18.20 7.40 5.00 Bumpty Bumo (Gonzalez) 6.00 5.00 Rimlniscent (Diaz) 14.40 Time 1:11 1-5. $2,700, el, 3YO, t.
