Mural artists Daniel Galvez and Pallida Montgomery were selected through a process that involved the Public Art Advisory Committee of the Cultural Affairs Commission. A "Percent for Art" ordinance, approved by the city's Redevelopment Agency, au-thortzes the allocation of IS percent of muniebpal capital Improvement project costs for ronirnlsslonlng public artwork. The "Journey of Promise" mural plcts significant Individuals and events of African American history Northern California. The mural references such things as the Civil Rights Marches In the 1960s, the Port Chicago explosion, the Influx of Southern workers to local shipyards, Pullman porters, as well as black sailors, cotton laborers, Jazz musicians and artists. The historic Images are interwoven with sections of textile patterns, Incorporating cokaul design elements typical to many African American qulUa.

Galvez, a nationalfy-reccgnlzed mu-rallst with over 25 years experience in creating large-scale public works, recently cmeted a commission for the NewYorkCIrjartmentofCultural Affairs a 12-by-64 foot mural honoring Malcolm which Is displayed In the renovated Audubon Ballroom in Harlem. Jackson's work with the clinics during the 1930s came to the attention of President and Mrs. Roosevelt and she was invited to the White House to brief them on the project In the 1970s Ida Jackson donated hundreds of acres of Mendocino County ranch land she and her brother owned to the University of California, specifying that proceeds from the sale of the property be used for graduate fellowships for black students pursuing degrees at Berkeley. Jackson died in 1996, at the age of 93. The museum's new mural will be featured on the next Oakland Tours Program walking tour of Preservation Park on Wednesday, Oct 29.

At the time Jackson enrolled at Berkeley In 1920, there were 17 black students on campus, eight women and nine men.

While a student, she founded a local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, a black sorority with chapters in the east, but none to date on the West Coast She would continue to be active with the sorority throughout her life, serving for a time as national president She Is credited with steering the group more the direction of social service, founding an Innovative health clinic for poor blacks In her home state of Mississippi.
