svxday xo ember 6 1988 Columbus UebgerInquirer sectiox MONDAY: Reaping the re wards of reading LIVING Grizzard 8 Josiah Sumbry Gum lovers get chewed out Women who chew gum in public ought to get stuck with the scarlet letters for no class At least how one reader feels about women who commit such a social infraction to the reader wrote "no matter how much effort is spent on making a fashion statement it all goes out the window when one is chewing gum "Women who chew gum in public scream look at me! I have no iguring somehow that Josiah is for his wheretos and wherefores on fashion the reader turned to him hoping he would spare gum chewers from blundering further The reader also asked him to address another fashion faux pas women with "witchy length But put a comma at that complaint Just in case the reader needs a defense we believe she wrote with noble intentions irst of all she gave gum chewers and long nailed women the benefit of the doubt reasoning that they do so because they know any belter them the reader begged know unless been taught" The reader herself apparently wanted to point out errors to the violators of public etiquette but was afraid of their reaction All of us could use some pointers on effective interpersonal communication in times of conflict and potentially embarrassing situations And finally the reader went beyond idle chitchat She continued gossiping like most of us do when people smack gum as if trying to break something that needs fixing but she took time to construct a letter and included examples of women with short manicured nails The reader reminded Josiah of a couple of realities one of which was that neither money nor power can buy class The gum smackers we noticed recently were not all from low income backgrounds but many were clothed tastefully and jumping out of BMWs and Volvos We all should know that no one should chew gum in the office Simply because it be done without deforming the jaw Besides it looks terribly unprofessional seen receptionists who behave more like truck stop waitress caricatures than the professionals they hope to be According to etiquette maven Letitia Baldrige someone once described what it was like being in a room full of gum chewers was like being in a jungle of munching baboons their faces vigorously exercising in wrote Ms Baldrige in the revised edition of Amy Vanderbilt Complete Book of Since the letter arrived really noticed how objectionable gum smacking looks One business woman dressed in a lovely brown and cream herringbone suit was working her cherry red lips so forcefully she resembled a mule chewing hay Last Sunday the gum popping of a fellow church member undermined the integrity of her costly coatdress and silver jewelry Her lips too were painted cherry focusing even more attention on her distorted mandible Women and men who commit such tacky smacky acts may spend big bucks on quality apparel but they end up looking like Dave Parker "The the towering professional baseball player who while smacking gum slithers the stuff in and out of his mouth as if it were a worm) I you must chew gum let it become a private matter Breath mints would be better if chewing for the sake of dental hygiene make us surrender the respect we might otherwise enjoy pouring on you And as for nail length the reader did make a perspicacious point: Women of distinction rarely possess nails Next time you just happen to see the likes of Princess Di and Jackie 0 take a good look at their nails You find claws on those well manicured fingers What you will find are short to medium length rench manicured nails buffed and boasting whitened tips Josiah Sumbry is the Ledger Enquirer is now part of the American amily By Mick Walsh Staff Writer Walt McCroba know what to expect that day 10 years ago when he met his new boss American amily Life Assurance one and only broadcast executive The WYEA TV general manager with almost 30 years of broadcasting experience was familiar with American amily of course But never met Leroy Paul the new vice president of corporate development Paul a former marketing executive for Royal Crown Cola had recently moved up Wynnton Road to the 18th floor of headquarters been hired to deliver the insurance giant into the communications age American amily had just purchased WYEA (since renamed WLTZ) an NBC affiliate on the VH dial and it was time for McCroba to meet with Paul Pur chased for an estimated $3 million from a group of local businessmen headed by David Rothschild and Kyle Spencer Channel 38 was to become a building block for one of the communications most successful corporations McCroba then in his second year as WYEA manager presented himself to an Amam security guard at the appointed hour and asked for sorry he was told Paul is in Japan and be back until the end of the argued McCroba talked to him this McCroba was finally able to get his point across and was escorted to Leroy office A 10 year friendship and a company which was to post net reve nues of $443 million in 1987 was to evolve from that meeting here folks refer to Amos family members as Mr John and Mr said Paul when Walt asked for Mr Paul the guard obviously thought he meant Paul Amos (vice chairman of the board of directors) I'm sure never heard of Nowadays after the recent $45 mil lion purchase of WTVM TV 9 Columbus' top ranked television station everybody at the Tower has heard of Leroy Paul and the American amily Broadcast Group The company sold off WYEA in 1981 to Lewis Broadcasting of Savannah and had been looking off and on for almost seven years to get back into the Columbus market A full page full color ad in the Oct 10 edition of Broadcasting magazine the bible of the TV industry trumpeted American successes American success the ad read out of seven American amily Broadcast Group stations were No (in the July Arbitron rankings) A listing of the group's properties followed The ad was printed before purchase of WTVM No 1 in this market the last two years Though the Broadcast Group brings in but a small share of total take every year the total market value of its properties exceeds $200 million These properties produced (Baton Rogue pur chased last December and Columbus are not included) $111 million in pretax earnings in 1987 But still says McCroda now president of the five station southern division a lot of local people are unaware that Amam is even in the TV business a pretty well kept secret I guess A lady at the supermarket read the story about us buying Channel 9 and she told me she even know American amily was in that Paul and McCroba pride themselves See AMAM 2.
