SJtJS. FRIDAY MARCH 28,. 1885. Medical opioioo with regard to Gen. Grant's case was given to the public February 28.

The doctors in attendance generally agreed that a cancer was forming at the root of bis tongue, and that this must shortly prove fatal. Dr. Douglas says the trouble was undoubtedly by excess in On this point physicians are not agreed. Senator Ben Hill of Georgia died some years ago of cancer on the tongue, ascribed to the use of tobacco, and udge W. D.

Kelley of Pennsylvania is a sufferer from a similar trouble. The causeof cancer, however, is still a disputed question. Medical authorities say it is neither hereditary nor contagious and good health and easy circumstances that would repel, most diseases seem only to invite this dread disorder. The increase of the disease in Eogland has provoked- scientific investigation, but with no practical result so far as reported. Many eminent physicians contend, however, that much of tbe threat and mouth diseases of late years-, among tbe male population are attributed to the excessive use of tobacco, which in its manufacture has become poison-, ous from the chemicals nsdd in color-, ing and flavoring.

They also claim that cigarette smoking is particularly deleterious to health, and is sapping the foundation of the youth of our country. Every one knows that Gen. Grant has been an inveterate smoker and chewer, and to this cause alone they attribute his cancer. All the Maryland electors for President and Vice President in this State visited the President Cleveland in a body yesterday at the White House. The electors were Glen.

Bradley T. Johnson, ex-Comptroller Thos. j. Keating, ex State Sullivane, Patrick H. Walker, Harry E.

Mann, Skepwitb Wilmer, Henry F. Spaulding and H. H. Keedy. This is a strong political power and may upset some of tbe best schemes of mice and heretoforego have bad the field.to, themselves.

Gen. Johnson is said to aspire to gubernatorial honors, and Mr. Keating wants to be collector of the port of Baltimore. What the other electors want, has not been made public. In any event this body of influ- 4 ential democrats will have great weight with the President, and may disarrange some of the plans of other factions of the party, which have been matured to reward political services to those who have nested under the wings of those factions.

Dear Sir Having been appointed by the Prssi dent of the United States to the posi tion of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Republic of France, and my nomination having been confirmed by the Senate of the United States, I have determined to accept said position which will disqualify me. for further discharge of the duties of the of.

the State of Maryland. I therefore hereby resign the office of Governor of the State of Maryland and, ask that this, my resignation, be spread upon the records of the Ekeeutive office, the duties of which now devolve upon you. Vefy respectfully, Robert M. McLane. Oyster not Pleased.

A meeting was held last night by Baltimore oyster packers and commission men, and resolutions were adopt ed condemning the action of the board of public works in extending the time for tonging and beyond the time prescribed by The resolutions declare that the extension of the. tonging season gives an opportunity to planters outside tbe State to obtain planting stock, which will be carried to other States, thereby depleting our beds, and by tbe time our next season opens will be used in competition with our markets. If allowed to Tem'sitf in our waters they would become marketable and increase our industries and give employment to all braoebesof the trflde. It is also urged that tbe object of tbe law was to give the beds a rest, and that tbe extension of tine is a violation. A copy of the resolutions was telegraphed to Attorney-General Roberts with a view to findiog out bis opinion as to the legality of the action.

Oar NeW Governor. Gov. Lloyd, at toon to-day, telegraphed Secretary of State Milligan, that he had taken the oath of office at Cambridge, and stated that he would send certificate of same for department by Thus oar old Governor goes off to gay Paris, and new Excellency will soon be gazing ont of the South of the Executive Chamber over the broad bosom of the Chesapeake, the affairs of the State government will go on as smoothly as if no change had been made. The present weather affords an excellent opportunity for pruning, and we notice that some few ot our citizens who pay careful attention to their fruit trees and shrubbery, have commenced the work of divesting them of the superfluous branches formed since last Spring. Grape vines should also receive attention at this season of the year, and a liberal use of the pruning knife in many cases would prove beneficial.

Shade trees along the street should also have iheir superfluous branches lopped off nd trimmed during this month. The Peach Crop. The peach crop, both in Delaware and the Eastern shore of Maryland, is reported as in good conditiod, and there will be an average crop if no late frosts occur to destroy the buds. Evaporators have been erected all over those sections. These evaporators often prevent the market from being glutted by using up surplus peaches, and are a source of great profit.

1 The hast ef the lee. Incoming steamers report the bay and most of the rivers clear of Southwest winds have blown the ice on the Eastern Shore and left the bay folly open to navigation. Business, however, has not assumed much activity about the Baltimore wharves. Thick lee. Ice to the thickness of six and seven inches was secured last Friday and Saturday by some of our farmers off their ice ponds, and all who are fbrtdnste enough to own their own icehouse have them filled with tfaisindispensible summer luxury.
