connection with its acquisition of WYEA TV Walt McCroba was named president of American Eagle a wholly owned sub sidiary of American amily Corp and licensee of WYEA TV Ken Gerdes was promoted to vice presidentsales and rank Hardman chief engineer was promoted to vice presidentengineering most important asset in our ac quisition of WYEA was the people in said Leroy Paul American vice president for corporate development in announcing the promotions American amily assumed control of WYEA on March 1 The company has also signed an agreement subject to CC approval to buy television station WYUR TV in Huntsville Ala McCroba is a graduate of Ohio State University with a degree in journalism management He was with Rustcraft Broadcasting Co in Augusta and Chat tanooga before joining WYEA TV as general manager in January 1976 Gerdes held sales management posts with WTVC TV in Chattanooga and WHTN TV in Huntington before joining WYEA TV in 1970 Hardman is a Columbus native with 34 years McCroba Ken Gerdes rank Hardman Picks Local Lawyer Columbus lawyer Cecil Cheves has been ap pointed counsel to the Democratic National Com mittee in Washington The appointment was an nounced today by national committee chairaman John White Cheves has been a partner in the law firm of Henson and Cheves a graduate of the University of Georgia and Samford Cumberland School of Law He was on the judge advocate staff while in the Air orce W'X Mr Mil Cecil Cheves romB Grand Jury Report that Court be taken out of police head quarters and relocated in the west wing of the Columbus Government Center Several of the recom mendations called for big spending for a criminal justice complex new fire stations and a central records facility for the entire consolidated government Columbus Council spends too much in meetings and should con sider bi weekly instead of weekly sessions the public records committee stated it also found that salaries for city personnel are not at a level attract and maintain the calibre of peo pje to meet the complex needs of this consolidated and reported that City Manager ranklyn Lambert is con cerned about the top ad ministrative offices being understaffed Increasing the starting pay in the police depart ment to $850 a month would boost morale and a higher calibre the public records committee said Most of the observations in the 33 page report came from committees assigned to public records roads and bridges public buildings education and public safe ty Among other things the committees recommended that: Construction of a new fire station in the loyd Road area be given priori ty and that Station No 2 on 29th Street be relocated to serve the growing north side of Columbus A temporary training site be established for the fire department perhaps through the cooperation of ort Benning until perma nent facilities can be provided A central records center with microfilming equipment be established for the consolidated government Columbus Metropo litan Airport be kept at its present location and airfield improvements continued Legislation be sought so that adjoining counties will pay their share of costs for having their resident in digent patients treated at the Columbus Medical Center Security measures be tightened at the tax com office by having guards there when money is being transferred The tax com missioner's office be assigned space originally designed for it but now oc cupied by the adult proba tion office Consideration be given to increasing the present 1000 limit on city purchases without specific council authorization The salary scale for city employees be reviewd Plat records in the Superior Court clerk's of fice be repaired All deeds and records be microfilmed lashing lights mechanical guards or stop signs be placed at all railroad crossings The grand jury rec ommendations were sign ed by Ellis Swint chair man and James Schools classroom to receive jurors said Suspend students with discipline problems they suggested If students are above the age of mandatory schooling the school ad ministrators could send them to educational such as Columbus Tech where they could learn a skill jurors recommended Jurors noted the lack of textbooks for students was this was brought about in some cases where new textbooks are being adopted and the school is in a make situation next ade quate supply will not help this jurors said Two years ago a tight school budget and increas ed costs of textbooks drain ed the money reserve for buying textbooks Since then Schools Superinten dent Braxton Nail has boosted the money spent on textbooks and supplies The boost apparently solved the problem of lack of textbooks as jurors noted Blanchard secretary Com mittee chairman were John Campbell public records: Bill ortson Jr
