Kids at Jeff Davis Pay Price for Error of Their Elders your move Jeff Davis The Georgia High School Association the ruling body of high school sports and other extracurricular activities in the Peach State has officially suspended Jeff Davis County High School from the association for a period of 12 months The Hazlehurst school which raised the needed money to bring members of the executive board together for a special meeting was informed Monday that the orig inal decision to suspend the school made by GHSA execu tive director Bill ordham last month had been upheld The suspension in a nutshell means that Jeff Davis can not compete against other schools in any extracurricular activity until next December When ordham made his decision after being notified that Jeff Davis had allegedly broken GHSA rules by play ing two brothers that the association had already ruled ineligible the Jeff Davis school board considered filing suit against the GHSA That suit however was temporar ily postponed until the county learned if the executive I waDsGo'erJ board would uphold decision It did but so far no word as to whether or not the school board will now go ahead with plans to take the decision to court The facts suggest that perhaps the school did err in playing the boys although they knew them to be ineligible in the eyes The school could have withheld the boys from the Nov 9 playoff game against Claxton and avoided all of the problems to come But the school and the head coach chose to play Reggie and Kenny Jones in that game and eft Davis was immediately suspended awaiting decisions by the Appeals Board and executive committee was a lot of feeling both ways" commented executive committee member Don Hendrix of Hogans ville been on the committee for a number of years and this is the most sympathetic group seen The suspension is terrible of course really a shame a bunch of kids in every activity in the school have to suffer for what some grown people did we investigated the situation thoroughly and no doubt that this was a case of openly and bla tantly trying to circumvent the Again we must point out the penalty Kids in every extracurricular activity have been hurt by the actions of the football team A gifted basketball or baseball player without the benefit of a competitive schedule in his or her senior year could very easily be deprived of a scholar ship very' difficult to'justify this kind of penalty In an era in which school administrators are trying every trick in the book to get their students involved in more school related activities the rug is pulled from beneath them Now ith nothing to do after school the kids in Hazle hurst will be forced to the streets The GHSA if convinced that the football team was wrong should have penalized the wrong doers and the buck should have stopped at the coach But it simply not fair to penalize the majority for the actions of a few and exactly what the GHSA has done Hopefully Jeff Davis will take this matter to court And hopefully the court will find that the GHSAs penalty was much too severe a shame this must be han dled in the courts but if the only fair hearing the kids will get so be it Bill ordham seem to avoid the spotlight these days Last weekend the controversial one which was designed to prevent high school basketball teams from utilizing the was invoked during a game involving ayette and Henry County high schools More about that issue tomorrow Kvl'irwk'kBKbl ss swsssww AP Wirephoto Terry air Plays Keep Away As Derrick Hord Plays Defense
