Bishop Wfcoekf of Michigan preachej a die-sftursa (rout the following text: "God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved." The sermon is regarded by some as a model specimen of High Church assumption. It has called forth severe strictures from the press, and is denounced by papers of the denomination. The ChritUm Tint; (an Eplsoopal paper) takes strong ground against the views promulgate! in the sermon, as being neither patrlotio nor Protestant, neither evangelioal nor charitable but -was oynioal in its criticism of the great body of oitizens and eensorous toward all the Christian Wbs in the land. It says "In brief, our national calamities are all he ascribed to the denial of Apostolic Succession in the ministry of the Church, and the rejection of the dogma of Baptismal Regeneration, the acceptance of which would go far to redeem us from the perdition to which we are hastening. More in sorrow than in anger, we pronounce this sermon an insult to the Church, or, if indorsed by the Churoh, then an insult from the Church to the nation whioh protects it and guarantees it In all its liberties, so that ven such a sermon ss this can be proached by one of its ohief ministers." Subsequently a motion was unanimously adopted by the Convention, ordering the publication of copies of the sermon for the use of the House.

Religious toleration, me French pP'T8 states, has been formally declared throughout the Empire of China. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. From Yesterday's Evening Gazette. Smart's Cavalry the Marauders were not Captured. The following letter, from a soldier in the 4jth Pennsylvania Reinject, explains why the rebel Qen.

Stuart was not captured while makiag his late daring raid into this State: Sotax's FoBD, Oct. 14, 166-. ieur Stuart has performed one more of those daricg feats, lie has swept around the entire army, and accomplished all, perhaps, that he intended. The word reached us, in the shape of an order, to march immediately, without transportation. In ten minutes' time our brigade consisting of the 4otb Pennsylvania, 100th Pennsylvania and 36th Massachusetts, were oi the road to Sandy Hook.

There we took the oars and arrived at Frederick city at 12 o'clock midnight. We were harried out of the city, on the different roads leading therefrom. Artillery soon reached as, ana we made every preparation to meet the horse-thieves, bat we were not xrati-tted by a sight of them. They came within tour miles ot: the city, then made a circuit aoross the Monoeacy, near New Market, (taking breakfast at L'rbana,) an approached the river in the direction of Uyattstown. Oa Sunday afternoon, one brigade of onr troops, with the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry, and one battery, came on thoir rear guard, but instead of hurrying forward, they halted to docido who was in icxmnnd of the troops The time occupied in the disf uta between tLe crBcors, gave the rebels sumcient time to make gotd their sseape at White's Ferry, four miles balow here.

Their rear guard, consisting of 300, was cat off, but as ytt have not been cap-tared. The whole of them could just as easilv have been out off and raptured as nut, but the wrangling about rank delealed tne whole plan. This is humiliating not a private in the ranks bat fell It as such nd the sooner the placing of such men in positive of trust is stopped, the better. We wero burned to Ibis point from Frederick City to intercept them, bat they did not gladden us with their appearance. They had with them from twelve to fifteen hundred horses that thev had stolen in the raid.

I saw six of the thieves (prisoners) that were elotbed in the United States army olothing, from head to foot, which they had taken at Chamsersburg. Five ot our men, they captured oa Sunday night, escaped and cams over yesterday. The reoeli have done little damage, save stealing horses, bnt they have accomplished one of the most daring feats in the history of the war. It Is to be hoped that the stable will be locket, since tho horse Is gone. W.

Dr. Randall of Boston, As-s'stanl Secretaries Rev. Dr. Clarkson of Chicago, and Rev. W.

S. Perry of Portland; Treasurer Herman Cope of Philadelphia. The House of Bishops organised and appointed Rev. Dr. Balch, Secretary.

The ocond days proceedings consisted mainly in perfecting the organisation, eleotion of standirg committee, disoussing diocesian boundaries, new rules of order, alteration of Canens, proposed alteration of the Book of Common Prayer, and action in regard to deceased members of the Church. Third day the House, after a brief remarks on uniformity of practice, the subject of the rebellion was introduced by F. R. Brunot, of Pittsburgh, who prefaced the preamble and resolution with some very judicious and patriotio remarks. The remainder of the session was occupied in the dis-oussion of the question without taking action.

The subject was resumed on the fourth day and occupied the most of the session. After the usual religious services (fifth day) the oase of Major General Bishop Polk was taken up, and a discussion followed the introduction of a series of canons, prepared by Rev. Dr. Goodwin. without any definite action being takio.

Soon alter the proceedings of the sixth day had com me coed, the subject of the rebellion was again introduced, followed by a report on the state of the Church, aud preamble and resolutions on uncanonical consecration Oi a Bishop referring to the case of Rev. Dr. Wilmer of Alabama The closing portion the session was devoted to report of the American Episcopal Church in Paris, and cousideration of the next pluse of meeting. On the seventh day the report of the special committee on the rebellion was read. The document deplored civil strife, bat declared the question of political authority onUide the pale of the action of the churoh.

The subject after discussion was postponed. Chicago was selected by a decided majority as the plaoe of the next triennial meeting. Provision was made for the restoration to the Ministry of degradod clergymen. The principal part of the session (eighth day) was occupied by debate on the special report on the rebellion. The usual services preceded the opening of the ninth day, after which a report was adopted providing for religious services in Hay ti, under the Canons.

It was resolved to publish the Book of Common Prayer in German. Debate on. rebellion resumed without action. Eleventh day, with the exoeption of resolutions providing for the ear of the youth of the Church, was eoou-pied on the rebellion report. At the twelfth eealon the Joint committee was instructed to revise the collection of Psalms and Hymns and report at the next Convention.

Committee on Misslous reports The remainder of the day was filled up by debate on the rebellion. The thirteenth day was principally taken up in the disousslon of the report on the rebellion. While the proceedings of the Convention thus far show considerable opposition to taking action on the rebellion, yet there ean be no doubt of the leyalty of the Convention or of the Church it represent. Unhappily, the question, What shall be dons with the Southern Bishop and Chnrches was mingled with the question, What treatment Is due to the government of the United States? when they should have been kept distinct. Henry Ward Beecher, tt is said sometime since enquired of a Brooklyn conductor, in his own peculiar way, whether the Sunday (street car) riding could not be broken up.

The conductor replied, "I think it might be but for that confounded fellow, Beecher. So many of the fancy people from all parts visit bis establishment, that it makes the road profitable. If he would only shut up, the thing would be done." The Sajjona Ragana, advocating the Introduction of the Bible in Government schools describes it, in remarkable language, as coming from a heathen as "The best book and the the most exoellent of all Eogliob books, and there ia not its like in the English language. As every Joint of the sugar cane from the root to the top Is full of sweetness, to every page of the Bible is fraught with the most precious instructions. A portion of that book would yield to you more of sound morality than a thousand other treatises on the same subject.

In short, if ny person atudiea the English language with a view to gam wisdom, there is not another book which nor worthy of being read than the Bible. The Provincial Synod of tho Protestant Episcopal Churoh of Canada has been discussing the questiou of connecting the dignity of Metropolitan with the Episcopal Bee of Montreal. Both houses appeared to favor tho project A committee was appointed to report to the next Provincial Byood. The annual meeting of the National (Methodist) Looal Preaoherf Association will be held at Newark, N. eommeneing tatnrday, the 26th of October..
