Ih.mo- crane friends of that gentleman at Washington I seem bent on overwhelming him with results of their intermeddling in our State affairs. The Pierce administration; Pennsylvania is to be ad to its trophies of deft-at. The Erie difficulties have been greedily seized by New York as an opportune means of furthering her ends. Last year she demanded the removal of tiie Mint from Philadelphia, on commercial grounds, and failed; cow demands it as a punishment to Pennsylvania the eurrence of the Erie troubles on her Hut she is not content with that; also demands an additional punishment to Pennsylvania, tbsit the duty on Iron shall be repealed, and a stab be inflicted upon her industrial inter It is not difficult to foresee the result of a compliance with these demands. The removal of the Mint from Philadelphia long been coveted by New York; and in the course she is now pursuing she only artfully en- eavors to conceal her real purpose under cover a plea furnished by an accidental quarrel between a portion of the citizens of Pennsylvania Now York.

Its removal would probably wound the civic pride of Philadelphia; but while would gratify the resentments of her rival, it would not affect either the prosperity or the pop ulation of the Quaker City. As to the removal of the duty on Iron, Penn sylvauia is not the only party interested. While mar have adventured more than any other State in that business, majority of her sister States are so deeply interested with her, that repeal of the duty on iron would injure a majority of the confederacy nearly aa fatally as our selves. The act of bitine a man's nose off to spite his face, would be wisdom compared with that of stabbing sll the Si.itcs interested hi Iron, the purpose of hurting Pennsylvania. Let those who threaten these things do them they dare.

If done on the grounds in timated, they would provoke a storm of indignation throughout the rjiate, without a parallel. Acts of such great public moment in themselves, ought to be based on some worthy and justifiable motive; but if based, as threatened, on the ample ground of revenge, the-pe' petratnr3 will need to hunting in advance, for the particular hills and mountains they want to full upon them. Gov. Bigler sees, as any man of sense can see. that if the menaced actsbeconsitmmated.thePem-oeratie majority in Congress and the Fierce administration, will be responsible for them.

They possess the power of the nation; and they must answer for the mannerin which it is used. Gov. Bigler is one of the pets of the President, who no doubt sincerely regards his re-election as essential to the stability of his administration. Let him therefore look to it- If Congress but lays little finger upon the industrial pursuits of Pennsylvania, or aspays to remove a national institution from her limits, in a spirit of revenge, to gratifv outside enmities, the defeat of last fall in New York will have to be consider i but a circumstance in comparison with the rout tMcIi will await Bigler. Even without this adjunct, I hope his defeat is certain: but with it, (Jen.

Pierce may set about writing the epitaph of hi? administration. The Temperance Convention met here to-day, and organized by electing H. Hulti. of Allegheny county. President.

A series of strong resolutions in favor of prohibition were under discussion all day, and were adopted with great unanimity. Tho convention was very fill, and presented a very fine array of talent and respectability. The Judiciary committee of the House agreed to-day to report the Senate bill to amend the Franklin Canal Company's Ch without amendment. There is considerable feeling on tiie question in the House, but the bill will pass, if the present feeling be any indication. The Judiciary cotnmitttee of the Senate has before it a bill, introduced by Dr.

McClintot-fc, to take the appointment of Inspector of the Western Penitentiary from the Supreme Court and give it to the Governor. The move is a political one. and not very creditable. Owing to the assembling of the Temperance Convention, but little business was done in cither House to-dav. E.

IIaeemsbibg, Jnn. 1854. There is a rumor here to-day that Fem.tor Cooper, having been elected President of tha Sunbnry and Erie Road, intends resigning his scat in the-Senate. Should he do so, it is probable that the Bigler men will endeavor to buy off Cameron from opposing Eigicr by electing him in Cooper's place. It is scarcely necessary for me to say that this all that Cameron wants and should he succeed in it, ail the patriotic opposition to Bigler from the Cameron Hards" will eease at once.

The House will rnjh through the bill to annul the charter of the Pranlclin Canal Company. Alfred Kelly has been here to prevent it; but, after feeling round, gave it up us hopeless. The Legislature is absolutely doing nothing. Barely a ouorum were in their seats this morning, in the Senate, and the daily sessions of bijlh Houses do not exceed two or three hours. The State Temperance Convention adjourned to-day, after adopting a series of strong resolu tions.

The effect of tho Convention ha, been good but there is no chance for the passage of a simple prohibitory law this session. ot over 30 or 35 members can be depended on in the House, and the Senate ia nojnore hopeful. A bill submitting the matter to a vote of th people will receive a large majority in the Home, and will also pass the Senate. The Temperance men will have to be content with this. Th eFree Soil State Committee, in session here, have called a State Mass Convention, to assemble at Pittsburgh on the firat Wednesday in June.

Ilia call wa publish to-day, for a meeting of our citizens this evening, to express their abhor-renea of tha enormous outrage contemplated 1J the leaders of the present administration in Congress, will meet with a response in the heart of every man with whom freedom is not an unmeaning term, who is not so wholly besotted by party affiliations as to submit to any and every indignity which the powers at Washington may aea fit to impose. The people of Xew York, of Cleveland, of Cincinnati, and numerous other etties and towns, have called meetings, and circulated petitions, and it behooves Pittsburgh not to be last or least in this great work of preserving what our fathers achieved by so mnch labor and peril. The call contains the names of many of orr citizens, who have sot hitherto been found in the anti-Slavery ranks, but who are indignant at the cutrage attempted to he inflicted upon our honor and freedom. Among the names we see that of tpa Tencrable Bey. Dr.

Hebbox, who has long since ceased to take an active part in political concerns, but who, at a time like this, whun iniquity has taken possession of the high places of the country, and Slavery lifts the iron heel of onpresiion for tha purpose of planting it in the Terr heart of our western territory, desires to titter the voice of hoary and venerable age against tha unholy scheme. Jspe there will be a meeting which will do eWor to Pittsburgh, and to the cause of freedom asd the eoostrv. MosOTOAnEtA Xavioatigx CoxrASv. Ye have been favored with a pamphlet copy of the Fovrteeath Annual Report of this Company, showing it to be in a very prosperous condition. as the statement will show Total amount of toll for the 01 JJeaucl aw.rov 11 Interaat rtaid on Couuon bonde 'J.

The Company having discharged the mortgage upon the works, and commenced paying dividends to Stockholders, have turned their atten tion to an extension of the works to the Virgin ia State line. In accordance with this purpose, survey of the river, front the mouth of Red tone creek to the State line, was made in Sep tember last, by John White, Esq. The entire aaent to be overcome by damn. is 41 800-1000 feet.

Mr. Lathrop, the engineer of the Company, pro poses to overcome thia by three dams, of four teen feet each, which have been located, by him and the President as follows, viz So. 5 at Bonnet's bar, or Watkins', two miles above Brownsville. No. 6 at RiceTs landing.

So. 7 at Jacob's creek, lower ripple. These three dams and locks, it is believed, can be constructed for about 150,000. Proposals for the construction of the work have been advertised; and since receiving a copy of the report we see it announced that two of the locks and dams have been let No. 6 to James Bums and John Kos, and No.

The appendix to the report contains some important tables of the business of the line, which ws will give to our readers at our earliest leisure. The report is a plain, lucid, and satisfactory document, and does much credit to its author, the President of the road, J.

K. Moor-head, Esq. Jobs Mitcbeil. whilom the Irish Patriot, trat now tha would bs Patriarch, has eome out in long latter addressed to Hixbt Ward Bscch-, in defence of American Southern Slavery. Bis argument is a rambling dissertation on the loveliness of Slavery, and an argument in its defeaee drawn from the Bible, and the example of Washisoios, etc.

There is nothing nw in it, except the unwonted leal displayed for the "patriarchal ln.titution, which is ever elevated above a state of freedom, as will appear from tha following paragraph, which is a sort of summing nP of hi' argument "Thus the ideal of a slaveholder's position is a tzus rmtriarchate. And how much higher are his duties and mbuitiaa tban those of a mere employer lor money wages, between whom and his laborer the ole mzus is cash payment 1 If be do his duty, how much higher he stands in the scale of God's area Hires than tha man who merely pays his merely pays ms S.turday night, ad workmen their wage, on dismisses them to the grog-shop." The proeaedings wera enthusiastic and harmonious, and mut make a aeciuea impression upon lue Biembers of tha Legislature. CoL IIuHi is decidedly of the opinion that the Prohibitory Law, Jr. the form recommended by the Convention, will pass both Houses.

The Convention recommended that the law should not take effect until April, 1855, and that in the meantime tha peo pla should have an opportunity of voting upon it, in the form of "Repeal'' or "Xo Repeal." This obviates the constitutional difficulty of submitr tjiic it to a vote of the people.
