A fast-moving fire on April 14, 1906, heavily dam-aged the top floors of the orphanage building, but all the children got out safely. Despite the proximity of the nearby creek, water to light the fire was hard to come by.

Just four days later the earthquake that leveled San Francisco struck. The society was hard pressed toTebulld the facility as soon as possible to handk the new Influx of refugees. Society members rose to the challenge. Water tycoon Anthony Chabot, at the behest of his brothers wife, Emelle, (a driving force in many Oakland charities, say the files) contributed an estimated $25,000 and free use of water from hla water company. Other prominent figures also responded.

The society's leader at this time was Matilda Brown, a granddaughter of Oakland's first millionaire, Frederick William Delger, pioneer settler and major property owner. Also active was Mrs. Wlckam Havens, wife of one of the Realty Syndicate's key principals. Syndicate architect Hugh C. White was tapped to oversee construction of two new facilities In the 1920s.

White adopted period revival motifs for both structures and considered light and air when placing the structures In the compound. In 1936, Matilda Brown -was honored for 30 years of service when the society decided to change the name of the ladles home from Autumn of Life Home to the Matilda Bfown Home, a name it holds to this day. In 1956, the group made another change, reconstituting themselves as the Ladles Home Society. Members continue to maintain and support the Matilda Brown Home cm 42nd Street near Broadway. Since the 1950s, the former Oakland, and several Bay Ana law enforcement agencies are aiding In the search.
